The air in the training yard was thick with tension as Dantriel lifted his sword high, the blade catching the cold light. He gave a single, sharp command: open the cage. The generals around him instinctively reached for their weapons, their knuckles white with uncertainty. They had all seen what those monsters could do. They had felt the hopelessness of watching their own swords fail against flesh born from shadow. But Dantriel stood calm, almost bored.

Ethan, standing nearby, offered a quiet reassurance. "Do not worry. Dantriel will finish him off quickly."

The cage door creaked open. And the monster exploded outward like a living arrow.

It lunged at Dantriel with terrifying speed, but the warrior did not flinch. He did not move. He waited — patient as death — until the creature was close enough to taste his breath. Then his sword flashed.

The blade bit deep, and the creature screamed. A black, viscous liquid dripped from the wound. Dantriel moved like a leopard, fluid and ruthless, striking again and again, giving the monster no chance to recover. He carved through it piece by piece, until the shrieking thing collapsed into a heap of torn shadow and black blood. The silence after was almost deafening.

The generals stared. They had seen many battles, many warriors, but this was something else. Dantriel flicked his sword, sending the black blood spattering onto the ground, and sheathed it casually.

"As you can see," he said, "our weapons are effective."

Alessandro stepped forward, turning to his generals. "As you can see, they are our allies. They are here to fight by our side. Their weapons are effective, and they are the only ones capable of killing those monsters."

Arthur stood silent, his mind churning. He knew normal steel could not stop those creatures — they had proven that themselves at the dance. But then how had the monsters that attacked that night been killed? The question burned on his tongue, but this was not the time, nor the place. He filed it away, promising himself he would find the answer later.

In the quiet of her room, April felt a familiar chill crawl up her spine. It was the same presence she had felt during the dance — the cold, suffocating signature of a creature born from darkness. She moved to the balcony and peered out, uneasy. But Alessandro's words echoed in her mind: *Do not go out. Stay in your room.*

She took one quick look, saw nothing dangerous, and stepped back inside. But the tension did not leave her.

All afternoon, she paced back and forth, waiting for Alessandro to return. The silence stretched, and then — soft as a whisper — her mother's voice came to her.

*April.*

"What's wrong, mother?"

*I want to show you something. But for that, you must sleep.*

April glanced toward the balcony. The sun had not yet set. It was far too early to sleep, and she had no desire to be unconscious when Alessandro arrived. "It has to be right now?"

*Yes. What I want to show you is important, my little one.*

April knew that tone. If her mother said it was important, then it truly was. Reluctantly, she walked to the bed, lay down, and sighed. "Alright, but I'm not sure I'll be able to fall asleep. I'm not sleepy at all."

*Don't worry. I will help you. Just close your eyes.*

April obeyed. Within minutes, she drifted — or thought she did. When she opened her eyes, she saw herself lying in bed, and fear seized her. She thought she had died.

"I'm dead!" she cried.

Her mother appeared beside her, calm and gentle. "Calm down, my girl. You are not dead. Your spirit has separated from your body for a moment."

Sophia extended her hand. "Take my hand. There is a place I must take you."

April trusted her mother. She reached out, and in the blink of an eye, she was standing in a place she recognized all too well.

The old, crumbling part of the castle. The place that had been her prison and her hopeful refuge as a child. The place where she had prayed every single day to survive just one more night.

"Why have you brought me here, mother?" April asked, her voice trembling.

"Just wait. You will see."

April stared at the shattered corners of the room, and the bad memories flooded back like poison. She wanted to run. "I don't want to be here, mother."

"I know," Sophia said gently. "But you need to endure it a little longer."

April forced herself to wait. Every second felt eternal. She was about to plead again, to ask to leave — when suddenly, the door opened.

A woman stepped inside. She looked different, changed, but April recognized her instantly.

It was her sister, Cira.

Cira was dressed in something that seemed to be made of smoke, dark and swirling, clinging to her body like living shadow. She moved through the battered room, kicking aside broken furniture, searching for something — or someone. April's heart twisted. Cira had never come to this place without a reason. And that reason had always been hatred.

Then Enzo entered the room. Seeing his sister tearing through the ruins, he asked, "What are you doing in this place, Cira?"

Cira threw a few old vases against the wall before answering. "I've only come to remember that bitch. The days are long until I see her again."

"What does that mean, Cira?" Enzo stepped closer — then stopped, uncertain. Cira laughed, a sharp, cruel sound.

"You are a cowardly little brother. You still fear me. And because of who you are, that is why my father has given me your place and made me his successor."

"I don't think it's because of that," Enzo said quietly. "I think it's because of what's inside you."

"Because of my intelligence?"

"No. Because of your evil. That is why my father has given you my place."

Cira let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Our father saw that you were weak. That is why he discarded you. Because you are not fit to be king."

---

The memory ended there, or maybe it faded with April waking in her own room, her heart pounding. She had seen the truth lurking in Cira's eyes — the same cold hunger that lived in the creatures of darkness. Was her sister truly that far gone? Or was there something darker still, waiting to be revealed?

One thing was certain: the shadows were not only outside the castle. They were walking its halls, wearing the faces of family. And April would have to find a way to survive them all.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter delivers a double punch of action and emotional depth. Dantriel's fight is thrilling and satisfying, proving that the allies are more than just words — they are true death-dealers against the darkness. Meanwhile, April's spirit journey into her painful past is haunting and beautifully written. The tension between Enzo and Cira crackles with cruelty, revealing just how broken and dangerous the family dynamics have become. The way the chapter weaves physical monsters with the metaphorical monsters of family betrayal is brilliant.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

**Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars** — An intense, suspenseful chapter that deepens the mystery and raises the stakes.

## Next Chapter Prediction

The next chapter will likely focus on April's return from the memory and her confrontation with Alessandro about what she saw — especially the strange presence she felt and Cira's sinister transformation. There is also a chance Arthur will finally ask how the monsters at the dance were killed, exposing a secret about the weapons — or about Alessandro's true power. With Cira positioning herself as the successor and the darkness growing stronger, the coming conflict could erupt inside the castle walls very soon.
