The battlefield had fallen into an eerie kind of silence, at least for a moment. After Alessandro left her side, April could no longer keep herself standing. Her legs gave way, and she sank down against the cold stone of the well, her back pressed against it as if the sturdy old rock could hold her together. She was drained—completely. The healing magic she had poured out hour after hour had nearly emptied her. And on top of that, she had blessed Alessandro's armor, pouring some of her very life-force into his protection. The effort had cost her more than she wanted to admit.

She closed her eyes, thinking she would rest for just a few minutes. But her body betrayed her, and unconsciousness swallowed her whole.

When she opened her eyes again, she was no longer on that cold battlefield. She was standing in a beautiful, sunlit clearing. The air was sweet, the grass soft, and there, in front of her, was the face she had longed for with all her heart—her mother, Sophia. April's breath caught.

"My girl, how are you?" Sophia asked, her eyes full of tender worry.

"Mom... did I fall asleep?" April asked, still dazed.

Sophia reached out and lovingly caressed April's cheek. "No, my dear. You fell unconscious. You have been pushing yourself too hard, using so much magic."

April lowered her head. "I think I overdid it."

"My girl," Sophia said softly, "you have great power within you. But you are only accessing a fraction of it because the last seal has not yet been broken. I think it is time for you to break it."

April shook her head desperately. "No. If I do, I will lose you again."

The moment she said those words, the world around them shifted violently. The beautiful clearing vanished, replaced by a nightmarish battlefield. Bodies lay shattered and broken across the blood-soaked earth. Vultures circled overhead, descending to feast on the remains. April felt her stomach turn and her heart tremble. Then she recognized some of the faces among the dead—soldiers she had healed with her own magic, men and women she had poured her strength into saving.

"Is this the future?" she whispered, her voice shaking.

Sophia stood beside her, her expression sorrowful. "It is one of many possible futures. The others are all similar... but there is one that is different. The future where you break the last seal and win this war."

Then the landscape changed again. They were in a lush, beautiful garden filled with white and pink blossoms, petals drifting lazily in the breeze. But the horror of the battlefield remained burned into April's eyes. She clenched her fists, helpless and trembling.

"I can't..." she whispered.

Sophia embraced her. The embrace was strange—warm, impossibly real for a dream. April melted into it, feeling like a child again. Sophia held her tightly and spoke gently.

"My girl, I know you don't want to lose me. But I am not alive. My time ended a long time ago. Do not lose sight of those who are still with you. Protect them, and let me go."

"But it's just that I—"

Sophia caressed her head softly. "My little April... I never told you the meaning of your name, did I? Would you like to know?"

Tears soaked April's cheeks. She was grateful for the distraction, grateful for anything that pulled her away from that terrible image. She nodded.

Sophia smiled. "Your name, April, means 'the joy of spring.' From the moment I realized you were in my womb, you were exactly that to me—my light, my joy. I waited for you anxiously, and when I finally held you in my arms, I knew I had not been wrong. You were, and always will be, my April."

"Why are you telling me this now?" April asked, her voice trembling.

Sophia looked at her with gentle knowing. Then she reached out and touched April's belly. "Because I want you to experience that same joy. I want you to have your own spring to cherish. But remember—winter must end for spring to begin. Your father is a cruel winter that kills everything in its path. He must disappear to make way for spring. Don't forget that."

April opened her eyes with a gasp. The first thing she saw was Lionel's face, much too close to hers.

"What do you think you're doing, sleeping in a place like this in winter?" he asked gruffly. "Do you want to freeze to death?"

"I wasn't really sleeping," April muttered. "I fainted."

"I'm not surprised. You haven't stopped using your magic. You must be nearly empty."

Lionel helped her to her feet and said, "Rest. You need it, unless you want to die."

"Yes..." April began to walk unsteadily toward the tent, but her legs wobbled. Lionel caught her arm firmly.

"Let me help you."

"Thank you, Lionel."

That day, April forced herself to rest, but the sound of the horn announcing the return of troops shattered her fragile peace. She pushed herself upright, her entire body protesting. She had to help the wounded. She had to make sure Alessandro was alive.

The hours that followed were chaos. There were more wounded than the day before, and the healers and medics ran back and forth exhausted. April searched the crowd until she finally saw him—Alessandro, crossing the barrier with Cassian. Her heart nearly collapsed with relief. He was not wounded. He was safe.

She threw herself into healing the most seriously injured soldiers, the ones nobody else could save. By the time she finished treating the last critical patient, her magic was drained again. As she stood there catching her breath, she overheard two human soldiers whispering while a group of elven soldiers passed by.

"How can it be that their army has no casualties? That's terrifying."

"Right? Maybe they aren't really human. They're savages on the battlefield."

The elven soldiers seemed to hear them. They turned their gazes toward the murmuring men—and by accident, their eyes landed on April. For only a moment, their gazes met. But that was enough. No elf could ever hide the unmistakable golden color of their eyes, and they instantly recognized her as one of their own.

They began walking toward her. April's heart lurched, and she turned away, trying to slip past them without drawing more attention.

"Where are you going?" Cassian asked, startled, as she rushed past him.

April ducked behind him and hid. "Just... don't let them find me."

Cassian was about to ask more, but then he saw the two elven soldiers approaching and understood. "Were they chasing you?"

"I'm not sure. We exchanged glances a moment ago. I think they noticed the color of my eyes."

"Then for now, it's better if you don't wander around alone," Cassian said. "Don't give them more reason to keep searching for you."

"You're right."

Cassian began to walk, carefully positioning himself to block April from view. She was grateful for his presence. The last thing she needed was to deal with the complications of her elven heritage while still recovering.

When they finally reached Alessandro's tent, April ran straight into his arms the moment she saw him. He hugged her tightly, holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.

"I'm so glad to see you're okay," she breathed.

"Why are you the one saying that? Are you alright?" he asked, pulling back to study her face.

"Yes. And all thanks to you."

Alessandro blinked, confused. "Me?"

"Yes," April said, a soft smile touching her lips. "Your blessing on my armor protected me. I am safe because of you."

For a long moment, he just stared at her—this woman who had poured her own magic into his armor, who had given so much of herself to protect him, and who was still standing there with warmth in her golden eyes even after everything. The weight of her sacrifice settled over him, and he pulled her close once more.

Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter was absolutely beautiful, full of emotion and revelation. The dream sequence with Sophia was heartbreaking and tender, and the deeper meaning of April's name—"the joy of spring"—brought such a poetic weight to her journey. The vision of the future battlefield was terrifying and powerful, and it added a new layer of urgency to the story. I also loved the subtle implication of April's future, the hint of new life intertwined with the coming spring. The quiet moments between April and Alessandro were swoon-worthy, and the vulnerability combined with strength makes this story so gripping. This is one of those chapters that pulls your heartstrings and leaves you desperate for more.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

Next Chapter Prediction

With the elven soldiers now suspicious and possibly searching for April, I predict that her hidden identity may be exposed in the coming chapters. This encounter could force her to make a difficult choice, especially when her father's cruel winter is still looming over everyone. Add the mysterious hint about her belly and the "joy of spring," and we might be heading toward a revelation that changes everything—both for April and for Alessandro. I also expect a confrontation between Alessandro and whoever dares to threaten the woman he loves.
