The morning light was pale and cold, the kind of winter glow that made the world look like it was holding its breath. Inside the room, Alessandro still refused to let go of the tension coiled in his chest. Abril insisted she was fine, but he wouldn't hear any of it. Heavy food? Absolutely not. Only soup and fruits — gentle things, safe things, the kind of things that would not hurt her fragile recovering body.

His worry didn't ease until the doctor had examined her thoroughly and confirmed that she was truly out of danger. Only then did the shadows in Alessandro's green eyes soften. Only then did he let himself believe, even a little, that she was here to stay.

But Abril had never been one to lie still for long. As soon as the doctor left, she pushed herself off the bed, determined to stretch her legs and feel the winter air. The balcony called to her — a quiet space where the snowy landscape stretched endlessly, colorless and serene.

"Aby, what are you doing?" Alessandro asked, his voice tinted with instant concern.

"I want to stretch my legs a little."

He was at her side in an instant, his strong hand steadying her waist, ready to catch her if her legs gave out. But she was steady — stronger than both of them realized. She slid her arms around his neck, studying him with those golden eyes he had missed so desperately.

"You look weird," she said softly.

"What?!"

"It's the first time I've seen you with a beard. I find it a little strange."

Alessandro blinked. "You don't like the way I look?"

"I wouldn't say that I don't like it. It's just strange."

"I'll shave later."

She kissed him then — but the beard tickled her, and she laughed, pulling away with a bright, teasing smile. "It tickles! You should definitely take it off."

That laugh — that pure, carefree, golden sound — broke something inside Alessandro.

He wept.

Tears slipped down his face, surprising Abril deeply. "Alessan, what's wrong?"

He pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly it felt like he was trying to merge their souls together again. His voice was raw, cracked open by weeks of silent suffering.

"You don't know how happy I feel right now — to see your smile again, to hear your laugh, to hear your voice, to see your golden eyes looking at me, to feel your warm arms around me, to feel the softness of your lips in a kiss, to feel the sweet fragrance of your body. I think I never truly realized how wonderful all of this is, how much I love it, how much I missed it. You are what gives my life meaning, Aby. You are the reason I exist. If I lost you, I would no longer have any reason to live."

Her heart twisted.

Abril pulled back just slightly, wanting to see his face fully. His green eyes were glassy with threatening tears, and that face — always so attractive to her — was marked by exhaustion and fear. She wished she could erase every night he had spent suffering, believing he was losing her. In that moment, she understood something painful: she had won the war, but she had lost far more than she ever imagined along the way.

She kissed his eyes, erasing the dark shadows born of sleepless nights. She kissed his pale, emaciated face, pressing her lips against the traces of his pain. Finally, she kissed his lips, trying to melt away the cold fear that had nearly frozen his heart. And she whispered against his mouth:

"I love you, Alessan. I love you just as much as you love me. That's why I understand how you feel — because for me, it's the same. I don't want a life without you."

She intertwined her left hand — the hand bearing the marriage mark — with his.

"On our wedding day, we swore to be together until death do us part. But even death cannot separate us. If I have a second life after this one, I will search for you in that life too. And I will love you again."

Alessandro kissed her then. His fingers sank into her long reddish hair as he repeated over and over against her lips, against her cheeks, against every inch of her face:

"I love you, Aby. I love you."

He lost himself in her mouth, pouring all his fear, all his longing, all his gratitude into every kiss.

The door swung open — Cassian.

He had walked in without knocking, but Alessandro didn't care. He ignored his brother completely and kept kissing his wife. Abril tried to pull away, but she was already enchanted, melted under Alessandro's embrace.

Cassian realized he was being ignored. With a quiet, knowing sigh, he slipped out of the room and closed the door behind him.

As he walked down the hall, he ran into Maya.

Ever since the war ended, Cassian had been buried in obligations. He had taken over Alessandro's duties while his brother stayed glued to Abril's side, and between that and Fay constantly inserting herself between him and Maya, he had barely had any time to breathe, much less to be with the woman he loved.

"Are you here to see Abril?" Maya asked.

"Yes."

"Is she okay?"

"I guess so — she was having a very passionate moment with my brother."

Maya smiled, genuinely relieved. "I'm glad she's okay. I thought she would never wake up again."

"That's what we all thought at some point. But I'm glad we were wrong."

Cassian stepped closer. His hand slid around Maya's waist, and his eyes darted around, checking every corner to make sure Fay wasn't lurking nearby.

Maya laughed at his paranoia. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Nothing. I was just checking that there are no flies around here."

"Fay is having an audience with the elves."

"Is she still insisting on forming an alliance with the elves?"

"Yes, and I'm sure she'll achieve it. She can be very annoying when she wants something."

Without warning, Cassian kissed her. Maya returned the kiss with just as much heat, and when they finally broke apart, breathless and flushed, Cassian pulled her into the first empty room he could find and shrugged off his jacket.

"What do you think you're doing?" Maya asked, though her smile betrayed her.

Cassian kissed her again, answering against her lips: "I just want to be alone for a while with the woman I love. Don't you want to be with me?"

Maya began peeling off the thick layers of her winter clothing. She kissed him back, passion burning through every word: "What do you think?"

Cassian pressed his body against hers, a dark, hungry smile on his face. "I'll take that as a yes."

What a tender, heart-wrenching chapter. The emotional reunion between Alessan and Abril was beautifully written — every kiss, every tear, every whispered promise felt real and earned. Watching Alessandro weep because of his wife's laughter was deeply moving, especially after all the darkness they survived. And the scene between Cassian and Maya? Steamy, playful, and completely earned after all the interference from Fay. This chapter balances raw vulnerability and burning passion perfectly, giving readers a moment of peace before the storm presumably returns.

Next Chapter Prediction:

The quiet bubble of happiness won't last long — Fay is still scheming with the elves, and Cassian and Maya have just given her more reason to be jealous. I predict Fay will discover the truth about Cassian's secret love for Maya, and her rage will push the elven alliance into dangerous territory. Meanwhile, someone else from Abril's past may resurface, threatening the new peace with an old enemy's return.
