A portal began to form, glowing violently, and the guards moved forward. "Get this idiot human out of my lands," the queen ordered.
But April stepped between them, planting herself firmly. "Enough! We came here to help you, and this is how you treat us?"
"The key that this stupid human prince carries is something extremely dangerous," the queen shot back. "That is exactly what the person who started this war against me has been searching for. Excuse me if I'm not being cordial — but he must leave."
Cassian stood his ground, fire in his voice: "I will not leave here without Maya."
"That will never happen. She is a fairy, and she must live as one."
Then something unexpected happened. Maya pulled a small dagger from her belt and shouted, "Enough!"
The guards immediately formed a wall in front of their queen. The queen stared at Maya, deeply irritated. "What do you think you're doing, Maya? Put down that dagger."
