The tent flap had barely closed behind them when April saw the hardened expression on the fairy queen’s face. The air inside was heavy, full of unspoken warnings and the distant scent of iron and ash. April’s heart thumped—not with fear, though there was some of that too—but with the burning need to act.

“April, you can’t do this,” someone protested. “You promised Alessandro you wouldn’t do anything reckless.”

The words hung like a chain around her ankles. Alessandro’s face flickered in her memory: that fierce, protective gaze, the way he always seemed to stand between her and danger. She knew what he would say. She knew what he would forbid.

But April was no longer the woman who waited helplessly on the sidelines.

“And I don’t plan on doing anything reckless,” she replied calmly, turning to the fairy queen. Her voice was steady, even as her pulse raced. “I’ll go to the battlefield with you—but I won’t be on the front line. I’ll act as a healer, tending to the wounded. If that’s not acceptable, then I won’t go.”

The fairy queen studied her for a long moment, something shifting in those ancient, luminous eyes. Perhaps she saw more than defiance in April—perhaps she saw a soul willing to suffer beside others, not because she sought glory, but because she refused to stand idle.

“Okay,” the queen finally agreed. Then she raised her hand, power already gathering in the air around her. “Then we have to go. There’s no more time to waste.”

A blinding light swallowed them whole. When they opened their eyes, the world had changed.

No more palace walls, no more silken banners. They stood inside a rough tent made of linen, the kind that smelled of damp earth and hurried prayers. Dantriel looked around, disoriented.

“Where are we?”

The queen stepped forward and pulled the tent flap aside. Outside, row after row of similar tents stretched across the landscape. Soldiers moved back and forth, their armor clinking softly as they carried weapons and dragged heavy boxes into position. The air was sharp with purpose.

“We are on the battlefield,” the queen said.

They followed her out of the tent, weaving through the organized chaos of the war camp. The queen led them to the edge of the encampment, where the terrain fell away into a grim, shadowed plain. In the distance, the enemy army spread like a stain across the earth—countless twisted forms, seething with malice and hunger.

April shuddered. She could feel it even from here: a cold, suffocating evil that clawed at the edges of her spirit. The queen’s voice was quiet, but heavy.

“I have been using my magic to contain them. But my barrier is breaking. It will only withstand one last attack… and then it will shatter into thousands of pieces.”

April looked at the fairy queen’s army, taking formation on the battlefield. Every soldier who stepped into the ranks carried a weapon blessed with light, a golden shimmer dancing along blades and spear tips. They knew what was coming. They did not flinch.

Then the queen turned to Cassian, and her eyes sharpened.

“Stay away from the battlefield. You have been carrying the key to the gate of Hades. Your body still emanates an aura—like the key itself. All the monsters will come for you.”

Cassian’s jaw tightened. “That’s why your sister didn’t believe you when you said you didn’t have the key.”

The queen nodded grimly. “Yes. I had that damned key for a long time. Its aura is still in me. Your sister could feel it. That’s why she didn’t believe me when I told her I no longer had it—and why she sent Fay to watch me.”

April watched as the queen’s demeanor shifted. A cold fire entered her voice, and she snapped her fingers.

“Give me my sword. And find me a crim.”

Fay passed the sword into her hands without hesitation, then sprinted away into the camp. April blinked, surprised by the sudden urgency in the queen’s posture.

“What’s wrong?”

“They prepare to attack.”

April wanted to ask how the queen knew, but the answer came before the question. She followed the queen’s gaze to the distant enemy horde, and there, standing at the center of that nightmare, was a silhouette.

It was thin. Feminine. It held a long rod above its head, and as it pointed forward, the army of monsters began to move.

Like an avalanche of darkness, sharp teeth, and claws, they surged across the battlefield.

Fay returned, leading a strange green horse. The queen mounted it in one fluid motion and rode to the front of her army. She drew her sword, the blade blazing with cold light, and raised it high above her head.

For a heartbeat, the world seemed to hold its breath.

Then the queen’s voice rang out, fierce and unbroken:

“For Feéra!”

The fairy soldiers braced themselves. The light-blessed weapons glittered in the dim air. And the horde rushed toward them like a tide of endless night.

April stood at the edge of the camp, her hand resting over her heart. She had promised not to stand on the front line. But she would walk among the wounded, hold their hands, and mend what she could.

Because the war had begun.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter yanked me straight into the heart of the battlefield. I could feel the dread coiling in my chest as the enemy army approached, and the queen’s climactic cry of “For Feéra!” sent genuine chills down my spine. April’s quiet defiance touched me—she honors her promise while still choosing to be present, useful, and brave in her own way. The stakes are enormous, and the atmosphere is wonderfully tense. I’m on the edge of my seat.

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

The battle will erupt in full chaos, and the enemy’s commander—that mysterious, feminine silhouette—will reveal herself to be someone connected to the fairy queen’s past. April will likely be forced to use her healing powers on a key character, perhaps Cassian, and the queen’s barrier may shatter just as the monsters break through, plunging everyone into desperate close combat.
