Out on the battlefield, a massive black stain crawls and hisses across the ground—thick as ink, alive with malice. Even from this far away, April feels it. Her blood runs cold. The evil and darkness radiating from that creature are unlike anything she has ever sensed.
Her face turns pale as paper. Cassian puts a hand on her shoulder, calling her name again and again. “Aby? Aby, what’s wrong?”
April doesn’t move. She only whispers, “That creature will kill them all.”
“What?” Cassian frowns.
“That’s not just any monster,” April says, her voice shaking. “If we don’t do something, they’re all going to die.”
“Calm down, Aby. Everyone is fighting right now. The queen is with them, and she has great power. They’ll be fine.”
“No, Cassian. They won’t be fine this time.” April’s eyes remain fixed on the distant horror. “My sister has released something that should never have come out of Hades. Even if you gathered every monster on that battlefield together, they couldn’t compare to the evil pouring out of that being. We have to warn them.”
But then Cassian remembers something far more personal. Maya is out there. His heart stops. “Maya is on the battlefield right now. I have to go get her. Aby, stay away. This is too dangerous.”
And before anyone can stop him, Cassian takes off. He summons his earth magic, using the ground itself to launch forward at impossible speed.
On the battlefield, chaos is everywhere. Maya fights alongside Ethan and Dantriel, weapons flashing and monsters closing in from every direction. Suddenly, the earth erupts into giant peaks, and Maya recognizes that magic immediately. It’s Cassian.
“Cassian’s in trouble,” she cries. “We have to help him.”
“What is that idiot doing here?” Ethan roars as he impales a monster with his spear.
“I don’t know,” Dantriel replies, “but we should help him. It looks like every monster on the field is after him.”
Ethan grumbles, clearly annoyed that he has to charge through a blood-soaked battlefield to rescue the human prince. But he goes anyway.
They fight their way to Cassian, and the moment Maya sees him, she throws her arms around him. He holds her tightly, so relieved that she is still alive.

Dantriel agrees. “You should leave, Cassian. You’re making things worse.”
“We should all leave,” Cassian insists. He points at the enormous creature the fairy queen is fighting in the distance. “That is not just any monster. April says it came from the depths of Hades. If we don’t flee, we’re all going to die.”
Dantriel stares at the creature. It is enormous, terrifying, and pulsing with something deeply sinister. “Are you sure about this?”
“Even from far away, April was affected by its darkness. She’s the one who said we should retreat,” Cassian says.
As they speak, more and more monsters close in around them. Dantriel sees the danger clearly. “We need to warn the others, but first you have to leave, idiot prince. Because of you, the monsters are surrounding us.”
Cassian doesn’t hesitate. He grabs Maya and lifts her into his arms.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Maya protests, struggling.
“Getting you out of this place before things get worse,” Cassian says firmly.
Then he uses his earth magic to launch them both away from the battlefield.
Ethan yells after them, his voice filled with fury and disbelief. “Idiot prince! You shouldn’t have taken Maya!”
Now Ethan and Dantriel stand back-to-back, completely surrounded. Monsters press in from all sides. Ethan grips his weapon and mutters, “If I die because of that idiot prince, kill him for me.”
Dantriel slashes through everything in front of him and replies with a dry laugh, “That’s if I survive.”
