Emma
Emma looked down at him, the mix of desperation and raw regret on his face only igniting a
fierce, pulsing anger inside her. His words, his broken apologies, echoed in her mind, but they
felt almost hollow in the wake of everything he’d done, everything she’d had to bear on her
own. She tightened her jaw, her hands shaking, and without thinking, she pushed him back,
forcing him to release her. He rocked back, looking up at her from his knees, eyes wide with
surprise.
She took a de ep, steadying breath, her gaze unwavering as she met his shocked expression.
“Mark, this isn’t about what you deserve,” she said, her voice firm, though her heart
hammered wildly in her chest. “It’s about what I want.”
He swallowed, his mouth parting as if to speak, but she held up a hand, cutting him off before
he could say a word. “You said I could have anything. You said you’d give me whatever I
wanted,” she continued, her voice rising, a determined edge coloring each word.
She angrily brushed away a tear. “Well, I’m claiming something right now. I’m claiming you. I
want my husband, the man who was mine, the man who promised me a life and a love worth
fighting for.”
She was tired of always giving herself away, she wanted something now. And she was going to
take it. He stared at her, speechless, the look in his eyes a mixture of shock and disbelief.
“I’m not letting you go,” she continued, her voice steady but filled with an emotion she could
barely contain. “I’m not doing this for you. I’m
doing this for me. Because I want my husband back. If you’re offering yourself, if you mean it,
then I’m taking you back, but not as some act of mercy. This is what I want.”
Mark’s mouth hung open, he seemed too stunned to fully understand her words. She felt the
weight of it settle between them, a choice she was making that went beyond forgiveness,
beyond compromise. This was her reclaiming what she loved, what she’d fought so hard to
build.
“So stand up, Mark,” she said, her voice soft but still firm. “If you mean what you say, if you’re
ready to show up and be the husband and father you should have been all along, then get off
your knees and come back to me.”
Mark scrambled to his feet, his movements almost frantic as he closed the distance between
them, his arms wrapping around her with an intensity that took her breath away. His hands
gripped her back, pulling her close, as though he were afraid that if he loosened his hold even
slightly, she’d slip away, vanish, leaving him in the emptiness he’d created. She could feel the
tension in his body, the quiet desperation in the way he held her, as if she were the only solid
thing in his world.
Emma let herself sink into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his arms, the strength in his
hold. She could feel his heartbeat against her chest, fast and unsteady, mirroring the turmoil
swirling within her.
For so long, she’d wondered if she would ever have him this close again, to feel the weight of
his arms around her. But she couldn’t have imagined it would feel like this—a mixture of
anger and tenderness, hurt and hope, blending together into something raw and undeniable.
“Emma...” he breathed, his voice breaking as he pulled back just enough to look into her eyes.
His face was a mixture of wonder and relief, his eyes searching hers, filled with a
vulnerability she’d never seen before. “I... I don’t deserve this. I don’t deserve you.”
She shook her head, her hands pressed against his chest, feeling the rise and fall of his breath
beneath her fingertips. “This isn’t about what you
deserve, Mark,” she r epeated, her voice steady, her gaze unwavering. “It’s about what I want.”
His hands moved to cup her face, his thumb brushing along her cheek as he looked at her like
he was trying to memorize every detail. “I won’t mess this up, Emma,” he whispered, his voice
hoarse with emotion. “I swear to you, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
She took a de ep breath, steadying herself as she met his gaze. “Then show me, Mark. Not just
today, but every day. Show me that you mean it, that you’re here for me, for the kids, for all of
us. No more empty promises, no more pretending. I need you to be all in.”
He nodded, a spark of determination flaring in his eyes as he tightened his hold on her. “I’m
all in, Emma,” he murmured, pressing his forehead to hers, his voice thick with conviction. “I
swear it. Whatever you need, however long it takes... I’m here.”
She closed her eyes, letting his words settle, feeling the strength of his embrace, the warmth of
his breath against her skin. This wasn’t a clean slate, and it wasn’t a perfect resolution, but it
was a beginning, a choice she was making on her terms. And as they stood there, wrapped in
each other’s arms, she allowed herself to relax in his embrace.
