# Chapter 11: The Venue, The Favors, and the Weekend That Changes Everything

Sonya stammers, but before she can answer, Hannah steps out onto the patio and looks at Navy Pier stretching out from Chicago’s shoreline. She comments that if she had known this was the location, she would have planned for an earlier date. Hannah recognizes the voice immediately and wonders why her friends and co-workers did not warn her before he came up behind her. It is Roarke. He greets Sonya, winding his arm behind her back and kissing her cheek. Sonya seems shocked to see him and suddenly nervous. Roarke says court got out early, then sets his gaze on Hannah and calls it a lucky day. Hannah fires back that she would think he would be exhausted from screwing people over. He steps closer and leans in, saying he never gets tired of screwing, Hannah. He uses her name deliberately, almost like punishment for her outspoken comment.
Sonya asks how they know each other, and Roarke explains that he represented Hannah’s ex-husband. Sonya finds that interesting and asks if pulling strings for the venue is an apology for screwing Hannah over. Hannah starts to say Mr. Baldwin would not do it for nothing, then corrects herself and says Roarke demanded five favors in exchange. Sonya’s jaw goes slack. She asks, “You didn’t?” The way she questions him makes Hannah think they must have a close relationship. Roarke jokes that Sonya knows he has a black heart, and Sonya laughs like that is absurd.
Chelsea and Victoria join them on the patio. Roarke greets Chelsea by name and then Victoria, recognizing her boyfriend as Reed Warner. Victoria is instantly charmed, and Roarke laughs along with her. Chelsea digs through her purse and pulls out a bag of chips. Victoria elbows her, but Chelsea says she is eating for two. Sonya realizes Chelsea is pregnant and compliments her. Victoria teases that Chelsea is not far along and will probably be one of those belly-only pregnant women you cannot tell are pregnant from behind. Sonya says she hated those women, and Hannah whips her head around, surprised. She asks if Sonya is a mother, and Sonya nods, her gaze briefly veering to Roarke. Hannah wonders what she is missing.
Chelsea and Sonya drift into a conversation about pregnancy cravings and whether the pickle thing is real. Victoria’s phone rings, and she heads back inside the tent to answer. That leaves Hannah and Roarke alone. He steps up beside her, and she says, “Unfortunately.” He ignores her tone and asks how she likes the place. Hannah admits it is gorgeous, but she is worried that young Sonya has a crush on him. Roarke shakes his head and says Sonya is doing him a favor, nothing more. He tells Hannah not to get all “single white female” thinking he is dating her. Hannah calls him forthcoming. He turns to face her, saying he is many things, but a liar is not one of them. He promises he will always be straight with her.
Hannah tells him to forgive her for not believing him. History, as they say, is usually the best teacher. Roarke laughs, steps forward, and reaches out to push a stray hair behind her ear. Hannah turns her head away, and the loose strand falls back down. He asks when he will live that down. His voice is low and tight as he reminds her they have been over this—he was his client, he did what he needed to do, and that will never change. He thought they were moving forward after Sunday. Hannah scoffs, “Because we shared a meal?” She lifts her head and meets his gaze head-on. She will not let this man intimidate her.
Roarke says it is because she stayed, because they laughed, because they shared, because he made the best opening statement of his entire career. Hannah calls him arrogant. He says she should not act like she does not love how arrogant he is. He is arrogant because he can back it up, and she finds that quality sexy. He steps even closer, his lips right at her ear, and tells her that her shoulders straightened when he announced his arrival, and she sucked in a breath. He guarantees that if he slipped his fingers between her legs right now, he would find her panties wet.
Hannah’s mouth drops open at his crassness. She really wishes it did not turn her on. She tells him he is wrong—he would find the complete opposite. Roarke says if they were alone, he might challenge her to prove it. Hannah replies that they are not alone. Then Roarke brings up favor number three. Hannah is shocked he is whizzing through the favors. He asks if she is complaining. She says not at all—the faster they are through them, the faster she is done having to be in his company. She gives him a saccharine smile.
He leans in again and chuckles lightly in her ear. Even though not a fingertip touches her, Hannah’s body anticipates him, eager for him like Lucy when she brings home a special bone from the pet store. She mentally recoils, comparing herself to her dog salivating over a bone. Then Roarke reveals favor number three: he needs her to be his date for a wedding. It is not local. They will leave Thursday night and come home Sunday evening. Hannah is furious. She calls it a huge imposition, way more than a favor. He smirks and says favor one was pretty easy, so who is to say favor four will not be just as simple. They never agreed to the extent of the favors.
Hannah crosses her arms and asks if he could ask her to move to Africa and she would be expected to consider that a favor. Roarke calls her dramatic. It is three nights. She will have her own room, and they will be around other people almost the entire time. Hannah raises her eyebrows. “Almost?” He says she cannot fault him for stealing away a few private moments with her. She says she actually could, though a smile fights to tip up her lips. He tells her he will pick her up Thursday at seven p.m. Then his arm extends and wraps lightly around her waist. For some reason, she does not swat it away like she should. His lips press to her cheek, and once again she lets herself down by not fighting him off.
She tells herself it is because she does not want to make a scene, but who is she kidding? She wants to know what it feels like to have his hands on her. His musky cologne acts like a vibrator right between her legs, and she has to squeeze her thighs together. His soft lips only deepen the ache. He whispers that she should think about changing the date. He would love to stand out there and watch fireworks with her in his arms. Hannah stiffens and says they are almost half done with the favors, and she still does not want to date him. Roarke chuckles, his body leaving hers, and says, “Don’t worry. You will.”
He walks past her, waving goodbye to Sonya and the ladies, then he is gone. Hannah forces her gaze to stay on the slow rippling waves washing against the wall. A whole weekend away with only him. Her at his mercy. She spins on her heel and faces Chelsea. “Chelsea, I need to borrow your pepper spray.”
Later, on Wednesday evening, Hannah and Lucy exit an Uber in front of Victoria and Reed’s new place beside her mom’s house. Victoria must have been waiting, because Hannah is barely out of the car before Victoria’s daughter Jade is running down the sidewalk, jumping up and down in excitement. Jade greets Hannah and then falls to her knees to pet Lucy, running her hands through Lucy’s thick fur. Victoria jogs down the steps and offers to help. Hannah jokes that this dog comes with a shit load of stuff. Jade’s hands stop, and she looks up. Hannah cringes and apologizes. Jade shrugs and continues petting Lucy, who falls to her back for a stomach rub. Victoria says Jade has heard worse, referencing her ex-husband Pete.
Victoria invites Hannah in, knowing she is probably eager to get back to her condo and prepare for the weekend. Hannah says she cannot wait and jokes that if she was not wearing a dress, she would not shave her legs. She hauls Lucy’s bed under her arm, her bag of food, and her leash over her shoulder. She asks Victoria, “You sure about this?” Jade runs up the sidewalk to their front door, Lucy at her side, and screams for Reed. The chapter ends on that cliffhanger, leaving us right at the doorstep of whatever chaos and heart-tugging moments are about to unfold.
