# Chapter 12: Wine, Warnings, and the Man in the Grey SUV

Victoria says Roarke strikes her as the type who does not like surprises. Reed adds that Roarke only knows about his relationship with Victoria because Reed is the Assistant DA. When a man stops pulling all-nighters and starts cutting out early on Fridays, questions get raised. Assistants talk, rumors circulate, and everyone knows Reed found his dream girl. He winks at Victoria, and she melts.
But Hannah is still stuck on Roarke. She remembers her party a couple of months ago, when a woman she invited brought Roarke as her date. That is where he figured it all out. The realization irritates her. She feels disadvantaged. Roarke knows more about her than he should, and she hates being at a disadvantage.
Victoria, ever the strategist, gives Hannah a plan for the weekend. Do what she has to do. Retire to the hotel room saying she does not feel well. Mingle with whoever will talk her ear off so Roarke cannot wedge himself into her conversation. And whatever she does, do not be alone with him. Hannah nods as if Victoria is the Dalai Lama handing down sacred life advice.
Reed laughs at them both. He thinks they are horrible. The man is trying to win Hannah over, not plotting her murder. Hannah fires back that Roarke is not trying to win her over — he is trying to get up her skirt. Reed’s face turns red, and he admits he cannot say he was not trying to get up Victoria’s skirt, but he wanted more than just that. Victoria glances outside at Jade and Lucy running around the small backyard, then says Roarke Baldwin does not exactly scream carpool man. Reed shrugs and tells Hannah that, no offense, she does not exactly scream carpool woman either.
Victoria smacks him, but Hannah waves it off. He is right. Then Hannah says marriage is off the table for her. If Roarke expects more than to get up her skirt, he will be disappointed. The words hang in the air, and Victoria and Reed stare at her. Hannah quickly clarifies that he is not getting that either, daring them with her eyes to say otherwise. Reed says he would go with Victoria’s plan, because he is not sure Roarke Baldwin is used to not getting what he wants.
Jade comes back in for dinner, and the family scene gets even better. Victoria and Reed exchange a look. Victoria says she thinks Roarke is like a five-year-old with a candy bar. Meaning? He does not seem to have a lot of willpower when it involves Hannah. Reed asks if that is a bad thing, then starts kissing Victoria’s neck. Victoria says it depends if Hannah wants the attention. She did. Jade screams, “Ew! Not in front of the kid.” Reed does not stop, and Victoria does not move away. Jade rolls her eyes and tells Hannah she loves Henry, but neither of them will ever be doing that. Hannah high-fives her and says, “One and done is my motto.” It is both funny and sad that the only person in the room who truly gets Hannah is the eight-year-old.
Then the scene shifts, and the temperature changes. At seven p.m. on the dot, a grey SUV stops alongside the curb of Hannah’s downtown condo building. That low hum of energy that always surrounds her body whenever Roarke is near tells her it is him. She says goodbye to Nate, her doorman, and tells him that if she does not return by Sunday night, he should find that man. She points to Roarke, who is exiting his vehicle and ignoring the honking horns and taxi drivers flipping him off because he is double-parked.
Nate walks across the foyer and opens the door for Roarke. “Good evening,” he says. Roarke nods, but his gaze falls on Hannah, and his teeth lock over his bottom lip. His eyes travel down her body, lighting sparks inside her like flint to steel. Nate moves to retrieve her bags, but Roarke beats him, snatching them up from her feet. He says he thought she would have more. Hannah asks if he is saying he expects her to be high maintenance. He shrugs one shoulder and says, “You are Hannah Crowley.” She fires back, “Now who’s making assumptions?” Then she follows him out of the safety of her condo building and tells Nate to take down the license plate number should anything happen to her. Roarke glances over his shoulder, lightly shaking his head.
And that is where the chapter leaves us — Hannah stepping out of her safe, controlled world and into Roarke’s orbit, with Victoria’s warnings ringing in her ears and her own body already betraying her better judgment.
Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating: This chapter is a perfect mix of friendship, family warmth, and romantic dread. I loved seeing Hannah with Victoria and Reed because their home life is so grounded, while Hannah is clearly standing at the edge of something she cannot control. The dinner conversation does so much heavy lifting: it shows how much Roarke already knows about Hannah, how uneasy that makes her, and how everyone around her can see the chemistry she keeps denying. The transition from Jade’s eye-rolling to Roarke’s grey SUV at seven p.m. is sharp and cinematic.
