# Chapter 50: A Dangerous Freedom

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 50 of "The Housemaid" — a chapter that begins with triumph and relief, and ends with a chilling twist that will make your heart pound. So settle in, because this one is a rollercoaster.

Nina lies alone in the queen-size bed of her hotel room, breathing in the strange, sterile air of freedom. She has finally done it. After years of being trapped in a gilded nightmare, after being tricked, drugged, dragged up to that awful attic, and treated like a madwoman, Andrew has kicked her out. And he did it without suspecting a thing. He was the one who threw her out, not the other way around. That was crucial. Because if Andrew ever got even a hint that this divorce was her idea, that she had planned every step, every false move, every carefully staged breakdown... it would all be over. The divorce would turn sour, he would fight her for everything, and he might even try to have her locked up again.

With her head resting on the pillow, Nina maps out her next move. Tomorrow morning, she will drive up to the camp to bring her daughter, Cecelia, home. And then? She doesn't know where, but somewhere far away. A fresh start. Thank God, Andrew never adopted Cecelia. He has no legal claim to her. Nina can take her child and disappear. She can even revert to her maiden name, shedding the last memory of that monster. For the first time in what feels like forever, she lets herself believe that maybe, just maybe, she is safe.

And then comes the knock.

Her heart seizes. For one horrible, paralyzing moment, she imagines Andrew standing on the other side of the door. *Did you really think it would be that easy, Nina? Come on. Up you go to the attic.* Her throat tightens at the phantom threat.

"Who is it?" she asks, her voice wary.

"It is Enzo."

The relief that floods through her is almost dizzying. She cracks open the door, and there he stands — Enzo, in a T-shirt and soil-dusted jeans, his brow furrowed with concern. He asks, "Well?"

"It's done. He threw me out."

Enzo's eyes light up. "Yes? Really?"

Nina swipes at her moist eyes with the back of her hand. "Really."

"That is... incredible..." He nods slowly, his voice thick with emotion. "It was my pleasure to help you, Nina. My duty. I..."

For a long moment, they just stand there, staring at each other. And then he leans forward, and a second later, he's kissing her.

Nina didn't expect this — not at all. Yes, she thought Enzo was handsome. She has eyes. But they had been so consumed with the plan, with the mission to get her away from Andrew, that romance never entered the equation. After years of being married to a monster, after years of mechanical, obligatory intimacy that made her feel like nothing more than a piece of furniture being scrubbed clean, she had convinced herself she was dead inside. That she would never feel desire, never feel passion, never feel anything again. She was always in survival mode.

But now? Now that she has survived, it turns out she isn't dead inside after all. Far from it.

She is the one who tugs Enzo by his T-shirt into the bed. He is the one who unbuttons her blouse — except for the one button he rips clean off. And everything that follows is a joint effort, a beautiful, breathless collaboration of two people who have earned a moment of pure joy.

It's so nice. Better than nice. *Amazing.* To be with a man she doesn't despise with every fiber of her being. A man who is good and kind. A man who helped save her life. Even if it's just for one night.

And God, he's a good kisser.

When it's over, they are both sweaty and hot and happy. Enzo wraps his arm around Nina, and she nestles against his bare chest, her cheek pressed against his warm skin.

"Is good?" he murmurs.

"Really good," she whispers. "I didn't think you felt that way about me."

"I always did," he says. "From when I first saw you. But I try to be, you know, *good guy*."

"I figured you thought of me like a sister."

"Sister!" He looks aghast. "No. Not sister. Definitely not sister."

Nina laughs at the expression on his face, but just as quickly, the laughter dies in her throat. "I'm leaving town tomorrow. You know that, right?"

Enzo is quiet for a long moment. She wonders if he's thinking about asking her to stay. She cares about him a lot, but she can't stay — not for him, not for anybody. He should know that better than anyone. Maybe he'll offer to go with her. She's not sure how she'd feel about that. She likes him — a lot. But after everything she's been through, she needs to be alone for a while. It's going to take a long time before she can trust a man again. Although, if there's one person in the world she can trust, it's Enzo. He has proven himself to her.

But he doesn't ask her to stay. He doesn't offer to come with her. He says something entirely different.

"We can't leave her, Nina."

"Excuse me?" she says.

"Millie." He looks down at her with his dark eyes. "We can't leave her with him. It is not right. I won't allow it."

"You won't *allow* it?" Nina repeats incredulously, pulling away from him. Her post-sex euphoria has evaporated completely. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"I mean..." His jaw tightens. "Millie does not deserve him any more than you did."

"She's a criminal!"

"Listen to yourself." His voice is quiet but firm. "She's a human being."

Nina sits up in bed, clutching the blankets to her bare chest. Enzo is breathing hard, and a vein stands out in his neck. She doesn't blame him for being upset, but he doesn't know anything. He doesn't know what Millie did.

"We have to tell her," he insists.

"No, we don't."

"I will tell her." A muscle twitches in his jaw. "If you don't do it, I will tell her. I will warn her."

Nina's eyes fill with tears. "You wouldn't dare..."

"Nina." He shakes his head, his gaze pained. "I'm sorry. I... I do not want to hurt you, but this is not right. We can't do this to her."

"You don't understand," she says.

"I understand."

"No," she says, her voice cracking. "You don't."

And just like that, the warmth of the night is gone, replaced by a cold chasm of betrayal. Enzo, the man who helped her escape, has just turned into an unexpected threat. A threat not to her freedom, but to her plan. He wants to warn Millie. He wants to tell her what awaits her in that house of horrors.

But Nina can't let that happen. Because if Millie knows the truth, she won't stay. And if Millie doesn't stay... Andrew will have no one to torment. And sooner or later, he'll find someone else. Maybe he'll even come back for Nina.

This is far from over.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter! My head is spinning. One moment I'm basking in Nina's hard-won victory and that tender, passionate interlude with Enzo — honestly, after everything she's been through, she deserved at least one night of happiness. But then Enzo had to go and open his mouth about Millie, and suddenly the ground dropped out from under me. His moral stance is understandable, but the timing? The stakes? It makes perfect sense why Nina is freaking out. And that final exchange — "You don't understand." / "I understand." — gives me chills. This chapter perfectly captures the fragile nature of freedom and the impossible choices we make to protect it. The storytelling is masterful, pulling me from romance to dread in just a few paragraphs.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

I predict that Nina will panic and try to deflect Enzo's plan, but he may not relent. Millie will likely find herself at the center of a deadly game — either she learns the truth from Enzo and refuses to believe it, or she discovers it too late, walking straight back into Andrew's trap. But here's the twist I'm dreading: if Millie is warned, she might not stay. And if she doesn't stay, Andrew's rage will know no bounds. Someone is going to die in that house, and I have a feeling it won't be the monster.
