# Chapter 51: The Locked Door

Hello, my dear readers! It’s me again, and I’m so glad to be back with you. How are you all doing today? I hope you’re ready, because this chapter is one of those dark, twisting turns that makes your heart pound and your skin crawl. Today we walk together through Chapter 51 of “The Housemaid” — a chapter where the truth begins to crack open, and Millie realizes she might not be safe in the arms of the man she thought she loved.

Let’s begin.

---

Millie calls out for Andrew, her voice bouncing off the walls of that small attic room. Nothing. Silence. She twists the doorknob again, harder this time, insisting to herself that the metal must be sticking. But no. The door is locked. Her mind races for a logical explanation. Maybe Andrew, half-asleep, locked the door automatically when he left to sleep in his own bed, still thinking this was a closet. It’s a mistake, she tells herself. It has to be a mistake.

But then she flips on the light, and her breath catches.

Three heavy textbooks sit in the middle of the floor, right where she nearly tripped over them. She bends down and reads the titles aloud: *A Guide to U.S. Prisons*. *The History of Torture*. And a copy of the phone book. Strange. These weren’t here when she went to bed. Did Andrew bring them up here, thinking she’d be moving out soon and he could turn this room back into a closet? It’s the only explanation that makes any sense to her.

She kicks the books aside and searches for her phone on the dresser, where she’d plugged it in. Nothing. It’s gone. She digs through her jeans, her drawers, strips the sheets, even looks under the bed. Nothing. She must have left it downstairs, though she could swear she used it up here last night. What terrible timing. Locked in a tiny attic, with no phone, and a bladder that is filling by the second.

She lies in bed, trying to ignore the pressure, trying to convince herself this is all a big misunderstanding. She’ll give Andrew hell in the morning.

Then, a voice.

“Millie? Are you awake?”

Her eyes fly open. Morning light is creeping through the little window. Andrew is on the other side of the door. She scrambles off the bed, stumbles toward the door, and scolds him loudly. “You locked me in here last night!”

Silence. No apology. No jingle of keys. She asks if he has the key. And his answer makes her blood run cold:

“Oh, I have the key.”

That’s when the sick feeling settles deep in her stomach. Last night she kept telling herself it was an accident. But how do you accidentally lock your girlfriend in a room and not even realize it until hours later? Her voice becomes softer, pleading. “Andrew, can you please open the door?”

But something is different in his voice. Something strange. He asks her about the books she was reading yesterday, the ones she left on the coffee table. She admits it, apologizes, thinking it’s a small thing. But Andrew’s tone turns cold, almost cruel. He reminds her that this is his house, and she can’t just do anything she wants without consequences. Then he says the word that cuts deep: *maid*. He says it with such disdain, as if she is nothing.

Millie swallows her pride, and tries to calm him down. She offers to clean up the books. But Andrew says he already cleaned them up. She’s too late.

Then comes the request. The bizarre, humiliating request.

He tells her to look at the three books on the floor. He wants her to lie down and balance them on her stomach. For three straight hours.

Millie is stunned. She laughs, hoping it’s a joke. But his response is ice cold. “Not even a tiny bit.”

She tries to reason with him. She has to pee, desperately. Just let her out, let her go to the bathroom, then they can talk. But Andrew is relentless. He tells her she’s not getting out until she does what he says. When she threatens to pee her pants, he calmly reminds her there’s a bucket in the closet.

The blue bucket. She’d noticed it the day she moved in. She never thought much of it. Now, it feels like a warning.

Panic starts to set in. Millie is confused, terrified. Nina was always the crazy one. Andrew was reasonable. He saved her when Nina accused her of stealing clothes. Are they both crazy? Are they both in on this? She sits down, picks up a book, and pretends to comply, hoping he’ll open the door. But he isn’t fooled.

“Don’t lie,” he says.

She challenges him. How does he know she’s lying?

And then those chilling words:

“Because I can see you.”

Millie’s spine turns to liquid. Her eyes dart around the room, searching the walls for a camera. Of course. A camera. How long has he been watching her? She asks, her voice trembling. He answers calmly, almost casually: “Don’t worry, I haven’t been watching you all along. Only since a few weeks ago.”

Her world collapses. She screams, pounds on the door, demands he let her out. But Andrew remains eerily calm. He tells her she’s in no position to make demands. She keeps pounding until her hands throb. And then, just when she thinks she can’t take any more, Andrew softens his voice. He promises he will let her out.

Thank God.

“Just not yet.”

Her cheeks burn. She presses her lips together, too furious, too frightened to speak. He tells her he’ll give her some time to think about her punishment. And then she hears his footsteps disappear down the hallway.

And in that tiny locked room, Millie realizes the truth that she has been running from all along: the man she loves is not kind. He is not her savior. He might be just as monstrous as his wife.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter left me breathless. The slow build of Millie’s fear was so well done — from awkward confusion to cold terror. Andrew’s transformation is genuinely chilling, especially the line "Because I can see you." That moment sent shivers down my spine. The psychological tension is masterful, and you can feel Millie’s isolation closing in on her. This is a chapter that grips you and doesn’t let go.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Now that Millie knows Andrew has been watching her and that he is capable of cruelty, I predict she will finally stop trusting him and start planning her escape. But Andrew seems to be setting a trap, and with Nina still in the picture, Millie might have to choose between two monsters — or worse, find herself caught in the middle of their twisted games.
