Something has gone wrong. Nina feels it the instant her car rolls to a stop in front of Andrew’s house. It’s not a sound, not a sight — it’s a pulse, a deep, instinctive alarm ringing through every bone in her body. Something terrible has happened inside that house. She knows it with a certainty that makes her stomach clench like a fist.
She agreed to come back here on only one condition: Enzo would stay with Cece and protect her with his life. There is no one else in this world she would trust with her daughter. Every woman in this town has been swept up by her husband’s charm at one time or another — how could she hand her little girl to any of them? They’d hand her right over to Andy like a gift. So Nina stands alone at the gates of her former home. Alone, and terrified.
It’s been a week since she stood on this street, but it feels like an eternity. She parks outside, on the asphalt behind Millie’s car. Crouching low behind the vehicle, she notices the red mark Enzo left on the tire — a small, deliberate scratch. It’s still there. But is it in the same position as yesterday? The day before? She has no way of knowing. Her mind spins with possibilities, none of them good.
“Nina? Is that you?”
The voice cuts through the air like a knife. Suzanne. Nina straightens up, stepping away from Millie’s car, her heart pounding. There she is, standing on the sidewalk, tilting her head at Nina like a curious bird. Last time Nina saw her, Suzanne looked skeletal. Now she seems to have lost even more weight, her skin hanging loosely off her bones.
“Is everything okay, Nina?” Suzanne asks, her eyes narrowing with fake concern.
Nina forces a smile so wide it hurts her cheeks. “Yes. Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?”
“We were supposed to have lunch the other day, and you never showed. So I popped over to check on you.”
Right. The weekly lunches. Nina’s stomach churns just thinking about them. If there’s one thing she won’t miss about this life, it’s those hollow, judgment-filled afternoons sipping wine with women who would stab her in the back the moment she turned away.
“Sorry. I guess I forgot.”
Suzanne purses her lips. Nina will never forget the way she nodded sympathetically while Nina confessed everything Andy had done to her — then turned around and ratted her out to him. Suzanne chose to believe the charming husband over the broken wife. That kind of betrayal doesn’t fade.
“I heard a terrible rumor,” Suzanne says, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “I heard you moved out. That you left Andy. Or that he…”
“That he dumped me for the maid?” Nina catches the flicker of shock on Suzanne’s face. She’s hit the nail on the head. Everyone in town is gossiping about them. “I’m afraid it isn’t true. The rumor mill got it wrong again. I was just picking Cece up at her camp, that’s all.”
“Oh.” Disappointment flashes across Suzanne’s face. She was hoping for a juicy confession. “Well, I’m happy to hear that. I was worried about you.”
“Absolutely nothing to worry about.” Nina’s smile is practically cracking. “Now, I’ve had a long trip, so if you’ll excuse me…”
She turns and heads down the walkway, feeling Suzanne’s eyes boring into her back. She can almost hear the questions swirling in that woman’s head. *If you went to pick up Cecelia at camp, where is she? Why didn’t you park in the garage?* But Nina doesn’t have time to explain herself to this miserable woman. She has to find out what happened to Millie and Andy.
The first floor of the house is dark. Last time she was here, Andy told her to get out and never come back. So she rings the doorbell first, standing like a stranger on her own doorstep. She waits. One minute. Two. Nothing.
Finally, she digs her key ring out of her purse. She’s done this motion a thousand times: find the copper key with the “A” etched into it, fit it into the lock, turn. The door swings open with a familiar click. Her former home swallows her whole.
It’s dark inside. Silent. No sound at all.
“Andy?” she calls out. No answer.
She walks to the garage door and pushes it open. Andy’s BMW sits there, gleaming in the dim light. That doesn’t rule out a trip — they could have taken a taxi to LaGuardia. That’s what Andy usually did. Maybe they decided on a spontaneous getaway together.
But in her heart, Nina knows they didn’t. Something is wrong. Deeply, terribly wrong.
“Andy?” she calls again, louder now. “Millie?”
Nothing.
She walks to the stairwell and peers up toward the second floor, searching for any sign of movement. Nothing. Yet a heavy feeling settles in her chest — a sensation that someone is here, watching, waiting.
Her legs tremble as she climbs the stairs. They might give out at any moment, but she forces herself onward, step by agonizing step. She reaches the second floor.
“Andy?” Her voice cracks. “Please… if anyone is here, just answer me…”
Silence stretches like a held breath.
She checks every room. The master bedroom — empty. The guest room — empty. Cece’s room — empty. The theater — empty. The emptiness is suffocating.
There is only one place left to look. The door to the attic stairwell stands wide open, like an invitation or a warning. The lighting has always been terrible there. Nina grips the banister and gazes upward. Someone is out there. She’s certain of it. Millie must be locked in the attic. Andy must have done this to her. But then where is Andy? Why is his car here if he isn’t?
Her legs barely hold her as she climbs each of the fourteen steps to the attic landing. At the end of the narrow hallway is the room where she spent so many horrible days during her marriage — her prison, her torture chamber. A thin line of light spills out from under the door.
“Don’t worry, Millie,” she whispers. “I’m going to help you.”
Enzo was right. She should never have left Millie here. She thought Millie was stronger than her, but she was wrong. And now whatever happens next rests on Nina’s conscience. She prays Millie is okay. She’s going to get her out.
Nina digs the attic key out of her purse. Her fingers tremble as she fits it into the lock. She turns it, holds her breath, and lets the door swing open.
