In the middle of the night.
The Mazda pulled over to the curb. The engine died, but the headlights remained on, blinding her, forcing her to squint and turn her face away. In the driver’s seat, she could make out the silhouette of a man. He didn’t move at first. Then the door swung open with a low creak.
Millie’s instinct roared to life. She was not going down without a fight. Her fingers dove into her purse, frantically searching through receipts, lip balm, crumpled tissues—where was it? Her mace. She still had some left after spraying Xavier that first time. If it was Douglas, she would never let him squeeze a single piece of information out of her. And if it was Xavier? Her fingers closed around the canister. She yanked it free, raised it, and pressed her finger to the nozzle. “Don’t come any closer!” she hissed into the darkness.
The shadow paused. Slowly—deliberately—he raised both hands in the air. And then a familiar voice cut through the night.
“Do not shoot, Millie.”
For a split second, she didn’t trust her ears. But as the words sank in, something warm bloomed in her chest. Her face, tight with fear, cracked into an involuntary smile. She lowered the mace and lunged forward, throwing her arms around the man who still stood there, hands lifted in surrender.
“Enzo!” she cried, her voice trembling with relief. “Oh my God!”
He hugged her back, and for a moment, she felt nothing but pure, overwhelming safety. The terror that had been coiling around her spine loosened and dissolved.
