# Chapter 31: The Shadow Who Loved Her
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 31 of "The Housemaid's Secret." Oh, what a whirlwind of emotions this chapter is—full of heartbreak, fury, guilt, and a reunion that throws Millie's already chaotic life into even more dizzying motion. So settle in, because we're about to explore the moment Millie comes face-to-face with a ghost from her past—and discovers that love, obsession, and protection are not always easy to tell apart.
---
The moment Millie steps into Enzo's arms, the rest of the world simply melts away. She inhales that familiar woodsy scent, feels the strength of his broad shoulders, and for one fleeting second, everything feels impossibly right. This is the man she never stopped missing, the one whose smile makes her feel like she's the most remarkable person on earth. "Millie," he whispers into her hair, "I am so happy to be back." And Millie feels a surge of joy so powerful it nearly sweeps away every ounce of her reason.
Then she asks the question that changes everything. "When did you get back?"
He hesitates, then admits, "A little over three months ago."
If this were a movie, this is the moment the romantic music would screech to a halt. Millie pulls back, her jaw dropping. *Three months?* She looks at his sheepish expression, and suddenly, all the pieces click horribly into place. That feeling she's had for weeks—the sensation of being watched, followed, shadowed—it wasn't Xavier or Douglas lurking in the darkness. It was Enzo. Enzo owns the black Mazda with the cracked right headlight. Enzo has been trailing her every move, and she was so blinded by the joy of seeing him that she failed to notice what was staring her straight in the face.
"You were stalking me!" She smacks his arm, her fury rising. "I can't believe you! Why would you do that?"
Enzo's jaw tightens—and even in her anger, Millie notices how painfully handsome he still is. But she can't afford to be distracted. "Not stalking," he insists. "I am bodyguard."
"Bodyguard?" She folds her arms. "That's a pretty weak excuse. Why didn't you just come up and say hello instead of following me around for three months?"
Enzo lowers his dark eyes, and his voice is heavy with regret. "Because I thought you were mad at me because I did not come back when you wanted me to."
Millie snaps back, remembering all too well the pain of his silence. She had asked him when he'd return, and he'd given her no answer. He'd blown her off. But then Enzo reveals the truth that cuts through her anger like a blade: his mother was sick—deathly ill—and he was all she had. How could he leave her? And now, he explains, he's free to return because she has passed away.
Suddenly, Millie feels like a complete jerk. She apologizes, genuinely sorry for his loss. She says she would have been there for him if only he'd told her. But Enzo, gritting his teeth, reminds her that he never said he stopped loving her. *She* was the one who wanted to end things. *She* was the one who moved on with "this Broccoli." Millie rolls her eyes, correcting him—his name is Brock. It's a trivial argument, but deeper wounds are underneath. Enzo swears he hasn't been with any other woman. He looks her straight in the eye, and Millie knows he means it. Enzo doesn't lie to her. But then again, she never took him for a stalker either.
She scolds him, telling him he shouldn't have followed her, that it was creepy. He replies that if he'd just walked up to her, she'd have told him to get lost. And besides, he insists, she *needs* a bodyguard. Millie scoffs. "I really don't. I can take care of myself."
Enzo snorts. He reminds her of where she lives—the terrible neighborhood in the South Bronx. He swears that on at least one day, she wouldn't have made it from the train station to her apartment without him watching her back. Every hair on the back of Millie's neck stands up. Is he telling the truth? Was there a shadowed threat she never even knew about because he vanquished it before it could touch her?
Still, Millie tries to stand ground. "Like you said, I have a boyfriend. And if I need it, he can protect me, thank you very much."
Enzo's voice drips with bitterness. "Like he protected you from Xavier Marin?"
The name hits Millie like a punch to the face. "What do you mean?"
In the darkness, she watches his hands ball into fists. He describes his helplessness when Xavier attacked her inside her own building—and how the man was simply let free. And Brock, her precious boyfriend, did *nothing.* He didn't care that the man who attacked his girlfriend was still out there. No punishment. No justice. But Enzo cared. He pounds a fist against his chest. So he made sure Xavier would never bother her again.
Millie's head spins as the pieces fall into place. She remembers Xavier being led out in handcuffs, shouting that the drugs weren't his. Everyone was so surprised. "You were the one who..." she whispers.
Enzo lifts a shoulder. "I know a guy."
He's the reason Xavier is in prison. If not for Enzo, that monster would still be walking free. Enzo is right—Brock did nothing. Millie doesn't know what to believe anymore. Her emotions swirl in a chaotic storm of anger, gratitude, guilt, and something dangerously close to love.
"Come on," Enzo says, gesturing to his Mazda. "I give you ride home. You think over whether you hate me or not."
Fair enough. Millie climbs into the car beside him, and that intoxicating scent of his fills her senses once more. She closes her eyes, lost in the past. Why did he have to leave? Why is everything so complicated now? He's done too many things wrong. She can't just forgive him.
*Can she?*
As they drive uptown, Enzo asks casually, "So, where were you driving in so much big rush today?"
Millie tugs at a loose thread on her jeans. "As if you don't know."
"I do not know everything, Millie." He glances over, his face half-lost in shadows. "Tell me."
And she does. Because despite it all—despite the stalking and the secrets and the three months of silence—Enzo is the one person she can trust with the story burning inside her. More than Brock. More than anyone.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
Wow. This chapter absolutely turned my emotions inside out. I started out joyful and dreamy—finally, Enzo is back!—and then, within seconds, I was reeling from the revelation that he's been watching Millie for months. And then the guilt over his mother, the fury over Xavier, the tension of her conflicted heart... McFadden really knows how to keep us on a knife's edge. Enzo is such a complicated figure: fiercely protective, but also disturbingly possessive. Part of me wants to cheer for him, and part of me wants to scream at Millie to run. The chapter leaves us with Millie poised to reveal everything to Enzo, which is both thrilling and terrifying. I loved every second of the emotional whiplash.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars)
## Next Chapter Prediction
Now that Millie has spilled the entire story about Douglas's abuse and Wendy's escape, I predict Enzo's protective instincts will explode. He won't just sit idly by—he'll want to take matters into his own hands, much like he did with Xavier. That could mean either helping Wendy in a dangerous way or going directly after Douglas, which would put Millie in an impossible position between Enzo and Brock. There's also a strong chance that Brock will learn about Enzo's return, and jealousy will collide with the already volatile situation. Get ready for a white-hot storm of tension in the next chapter.
