The day had already been heavy with fear, but Millie’s heart nearly stopped when her phone buzzed with Brock’s name on the screen. Her attorney — a man who had all but abandoned her when her life turned into a nightmare — suddenly had the nerve to call. Millie braced herself for more bad news, but she wasn’t prepared for the confession that followed. Brock sighed, his voice thick with guilt. He admitted he had been unprofessional, that he owed her an apology, and that whatever she had done wrong, she had asked him to be her attorney and he should have been there.

Millie accepted his apology quietly, but the real reason for his call slashed through her like a blade. The police had tested clothing they seized from her laundry hamper — not for blood, but for gunshot residue. The test came back positive. Millie’s mouth fell open. She had assumed they were hunting for bloodstains, but this was far worse. Brock believed the detectives had been waiting for that piece of forensic evidence to make their case a slam dunk. In his grim estimation, they were probably obtaining an arrest warrant at that very moment.

The world tilted. Millie’s knees trembled. She managed a choked “Thanks” before hanging up, turning away from Enzo so he wouldn’t see her eyes flood with tears. *Thanks for nothing. Thanks for abandoning me when my life is in shambles.* Because now every piece of evidence pointed straight at her — gunshot residue on her clothes, her fingerprints on the murder weapon, and a doorman willing to place her inside the building at the time of the murder. Wendy had woven a flawless trap, and Millie was about to be the one to hang for it.

Enzo’s large hand settled on her shoulder. “Millie, what happened? What did he say?”

She wiped her eyes and told him – the gunshot residue, the imminent arrest warrant, the suffocating weight of utter hopelessness. Enzo nodded with grim understanding. “If you fire a blank, you still have the gunshot residue on your clothing.”

Millie buried her face in her hands. “What am I going to do?”

But Enzo grabbed her by the shoulders, his voice burning with conviction. “I will not give up. Do you understand me? No matter what happens, I will not give up. I will get you free.”

She believed he meant it. She just didn’t believe he could do it. The net was tightening, and every avenue seemed to end in handcuffs. So Millie did what any cornered woman would do: she insisted on going to that cabin on the lake. The little address scribbled on a paper towel felt like her only thread to the truth. She needed to look the bastard in the eye — to ask him why he had done this to her. And if Wendy was there too, well, Millie had some ideas that made even her own blood run cold.

Enzo’s eyes widened in panic. Before she could take two steps, he raced to the kitchen, snatched the paper towel, crumbled it into his fist, and shoved it under the running tap until the ink bled away into nothing. “No,” he said firmly. “I will not let you do something stupid.”

But Millie lifted her chin, defiance hardening her voice. “Too late. I already memorized the address.”

His sharp tone cut through the room. “Millie! Do not go to the cabin. You are not thinking clearly. You have done nothing wrong, and you will not go to prison unless you give them a reason to send you!”

“You’re wrong,” she whispered. “I’m going to prison no matter what. I may as well earn it.”

Enzo seized her wrist with his powerful hand, not crushing her, but firm enough that she couldn’t escape. His eyes pleaded with her. “Promise me you will not go to that cabin.” He held her there, caught between the love in his heart and the recklessness in hers. It was sweet, really. Brock used to say he loved her, but Enzo truly did. Even if Millie were arrested tomorrow, she knew Enzo would fight every day to expose the truth and set her free.

Finally, Millie sighed. “Fine. I won’t go.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Enzo released her wrist, taking a miserable step back. “And I promise — I will make this right.”

Millie nodded, then reached for her purse on the futon. It was time to go back to her apartment and face the music. Enzo offered to escort her, but she refused. “I don’t want you to see it when they snap the cuffs on me,” she said, trying to force a brave smile.

He kissed her — a long, aching kiss that almost made her forget the prison sentence looming over her head. Nobody could kiss like that man, she thought. Brock sure couldn’t. Enzo whispered into her ear, “I will not let you go back to the prison.” Then he squeezed her hand, promising to find her a good lawyer, to find a way to pay for it. His little studio apartment was crammed with furniture salvaged from the garbage, and Millie bit her tongue to stop a sarcastic remark.

“I’ll miss you,” she said softly.

“I’ll miss you too.”

“And… I love you.”

The words felt so different now. They had been hollow when she said them to Brock, but with Enzo, they felt like truth. “I love you too, Millie. So much.”

Millie loved him, too. She had always loved him. And that made it even harder to do what she had to do. Because as she slung her purse over her shoulder and walked out the door, she knew she was carrying something she had no business carrying: Enzo’s car keys, stashed secretly inside her purse.

She had made him a promise.

And she had already broken it.

Meanwhile, far away from the chaos of the city, the air was thick with the pop of a champagne cork. Wendy and Russell were celebrating, toasting their brilliant, ruthless success. They had slipped away from the prying eyes of the reporters who camped outside both the penthouse and the Long Island house, and now they were safely tucked inside Russell’s cabin by the lake. Technically, the cabin belonged to Marybeth — the wife Russell had destroyed and discarded. But Wendy didn’t care. Not anymore.

She was rich beyond her wildest dreams. Rich beyond all human comprehension, as she giddily thought. Who needed Marybeth’s dinky two-bedroom cabin when she had a fortune about to be hers? Apparently, the cabin did have one spectacular feature — an enormous bathtub with a whirlpool setting that felt like a private Jacuzzi. But that was just a bonus.

During the drive, they had kept their eyes glued to the rearview mirror, watching for any trailing reporters. The final stretch of road was deserted, so they knew they were safe. Russell had told Marybeth he was going on some business trip — scouting furniture, or whatever. Wendy didn’t care about the lie. The wife didn’t matter anymore.

“I’m so happy,” Wendy murmured, leaning into Russell’s side. “I don’t think I’ve been this happy in a long time.”

Russell smiled, but there was something tight in his expression, something lurking just beneath the surface... something Wendy, in her greedy triumph, failed to notice.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

What a gut-wrenching chapter. The tension is suffocating — Millie is trapped between her love for Enzo and her desperate need to fight back, and watching her promise not to go to the cabin while knowing she has those car keys hidden in her purse is pure agony. I love that even in the darkest moment, Enzo’s devotion shines through. And then we switch to Wendy’s perspective and see her celebrating with champagne, completely oblivious to the fact that Millie is about to come crashing through her perfect little victory. The contrast is chilling. The writing made my heart race, and that cliffhanger with Russell’s "tight expression" sent shivers down my spine.

## Next Chapter Prediction

Millie is absolutely going to drive Enzo’s car to that cabin, and she’s going to arrive just as Wendy and Russell are toasting their freedom. But here’s the twist: Russell’s tight smile makes me think he’s not entirely on Wendy’s side — maybe he’s planning to betray her too, or maybe Marybeth has her own ace up her sleeve. In the next chapter, expect a violent confrontation at the cabin, secrets exploding in everyone’s faces, and Millie fighting not just for her freedom, but for the truth that could destroy them all.
