# Chapter 66: The Open Window

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 66 of *The Housemaid’s Secret*. This is one of those chapters that feels like a held breath — tense, quiet, and suddenly sharp. We find ourselves trapped inside a moment of celebration that’s beginning to curdle, and by the end, the rain and the silence tell us something terrible is coming.

When we last left our narrator, the plan had actually worked. Detective Ramirez believed Millie Calloway was guilty, and now, tucked away in a rainy cabin with Russell, the architect of all this chaos is feeling triumphant. She swirls the champagne in her glass, watching Russell’s reflection in the dim bathroom light. He’s handsome, she thinks — very handsome — but that’s the only reason she’s kept him around. Because that night, when it came time to kill Douglas, Russell cowered in the kitchen while she did the dirty work.

Can you imagine? She still can’t believe it. She lost so much respect for him that night. And yet, there he sits, looking at her like *she’s* the monster. It makes her blood simmer. *He should be grateful*, she thinks. *He should be thanking me. Instead, he’s staring at me like I’m some kind of villain.*

And lately, he’s been talking about Marybeth more and more. Not with anger — with something softer. That’s a dangerous sign. She doesn’t want Russell to go running back to his shrew of a wife. If he does, so be it. She’ll find somebody new to enjoy her millions with. She doesn’t need a man who can’t even stomach the truth of what they did.

“This is delicious,” she says, tipping the last of the champagne into his glass. “Where did you get it?”

“Marybeth likes it,” Russell replies.

There it is again. His wife’s name, spoken like a memory he’s beginning to treasure. The narrator’s irritation grows. She asks if there’s more champagne, and Russell casually tells her there might be wine in the kitchen — but he doesn’t offer to fetch it himself. Of course he doesn’t. Men are all the same, aren’t they? In the beginning, they trip over themselves to please you. Then, eventually, they take you for granted. What kind of gentleman lets a woman go searching for her own wine?

But she’s craving it, and the champagne bottle had only been half full to begin with. So she grabs a towel, wraps it around her naked body, and pads out of the bathroom. Her wet feet leave prints on the wooden floor as she crosses the living room. Outside, the rain hammers down on the porch, streaming off the roof. It’s a good thing, she thinks. If somebody had tried to follow them, there wouldn’t be a single tire track left to trace. The storm is their ally.

She slips into the kitchen, and sure enough, there’s a bottle on the counter. Pinot noir. Three-quarters full. A bit cheap, but it’ll do. She grabs it and starts heading back toward the bathroom.

Then she stops short.

One of the cabin’s windows is wide open.

Her mind scrambles. *Was that window open when we got here?* She doesn’t remember it being open. She tries to recall their arrival — but no, they were too busy celebrating the news that Detective Ramirez planned to arrest Millie Calloway. They got away with it. *They really got away with it.* So had the window been open the whole time? She truly can’t remember. It certainly could have been.

But now, with the rain pouring down, the window is impossible to ignore. Droplets are streaming inside, soaking the wood around the frame. That window should be closed.

She sets down the bottle of wine on the end table next to the sofa and marches over to the window. The raindrops are ice cold, smacking her in the face and peppering her bare arms. She struggles briefly with the frame before finally managing to shove it closed.

There.

She grabs the wine and returns to the bathroom, where Russell is still soaking in the tub, dark hair plastered to his skull. At first, she thinks his face is wet from the bathwater. But then she looks closer.

And she realizes the truth.

“Are you crying?” she blurts out.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating**

Oh, this chapter gave me chills. There’s something so chilling about the way the narrator rationalizes murder and then feels *offended* that Russell isn’t grateful. The open window was a small detail — but in a thriller like this, a single open window can mean the world is about to collapse. And Russell’s tears? That’s not guilt. That’s regret. That’s a man who’s starting to realize what he’s become. The tension is building beautifully, and I can already feel the walls closing in on both of them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction**

I think Russell’s tears are about to crack the whole story open. He may be harboring more than just guilt — perhaps a secret of his own, or a growing desire to turn himself in. And that open window? I suspect someone else has been watching them the entire time. Millie might not be as helpless as they think — or worse, someone connected to Douglas is already inside that cabin. Next chapter, I predict the truth begins to unravel, and their “perfect escape” will turn into a trap.
