# Chapter 68: The Bitter Taste of Victory

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 68 of *The Housemaid’s Secret* — a chapter that flips Wendy’s world upside down just when she thinks she’s won everything.

Wendy had just stepped out of the shower, feeling unstoppable. In her mind, she was already the grieving widow with a fortune in her name. She pictured herself strutting around as the woman in charge — rich, untouchable, victorious. She even relished the idea of Joe Bennick, Douglas’s best friend and executor of his estate, having to bow down to her. After all, what choice did he have? She was the wife. She was the one left behind. She was convinced the money would be hers.

Wrapped in a bathrobe, she dashed into the living room just in time to catch her phone before the call went to voicemail. The name on the screen: Joseph Bennick.

“Hello, Joe,” she said, savoring the moment.

“Hey, Wendy.”

The sheer misery in his voice made her smile. This was winning. This was power.

She reminded him coldly that he was supposed to call her hours ago. He apologized — but with a sharp, bitter edge. “My best friend was just murdered. I’m not exactly functioning at 100 percent right now.”

Wendy didn’t care. She was all business. She reminded him that he was the executor of Douglas’s estate, and if he couldn’t do his job, maybe someone else should step in. Joe pushed back, insisting that Doug wanted him. “It’s the least I can do to follow his wishes.”

That should have been her first warning. But Wendy pressed forward.

“So when are his assets going to be transferred over to me? I need to pay my bills.”

She was thinking about the penthouse mortgage, the island house, all the bills Douglas had cut off when he canceled her credit cards. She needed cash — fast.

Then Joe dropped the bomb.

“Wendy, are you aware that Doug changed his will last month?”

Her heart stopped. No. No, that couldn’t be true.

“He changed his will. Left everything to charity.”

A wave of dizziness washed over her. She remembered when Douglas had drawn up the will leaving everything to her. She had gone with him to the attorney herself, making sure it was done. Douglas was a procrastinator, but he had done it. She had been certain of that. It never even occurred to her that he might have changed everything after their separation. He wouldn’t have done that.

Unless...

“You’re lying!” she spat. “You’re making this up just to keep me from getting any of his money.”

But Joe wasn’t lying. He told her he had a notarized copy of the will right in front of him.

“But how could he do that?” she sputtered.

Then Joe delivered the cruelest blow. “Well, when Doug explained it to me, he mentioned something about you being a lying, manipulative bitch, and he didn’t want you to have any of his money.”

Wendy felt her world crumble. Her vision blurred. Her chest tightened. Douglas had actually done it — he had cut her out completely. She thought he had only talked about leaving everything to charity, but no. He had already put the wheels in motion.

She raged and ranted, threatening to fight the will. “I’m his wife, for God’s sake! I will fight this, and believe me, I will win!”

Joe was unbothered. “Okay. Whatever you say, Wendy. But in the meantime, I’m going to need you to vacate both the penthouse and the house on the island, because we’re putting them up for sale.”

“Go to hell!” she hissed, and ended the call.

But her hands were shaking. Desperation clawed at her. She tried to convince herself that Douglas couldn’t just sign a paper and leave her with nothing. She could fight this. And with Douglas gone? He couldn’t fight back. Some way, somehow, she was going to get her fair share.

She wouldn’t have the vast estate she had imagined. But that was okay — she would take what she could get.

Then, while she stood there staring at her phone, trying to map out her next move, it rang again.

Her breath caught when she saw the caller ID.

The New York Police Department.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter is *deliciously* dramatic! Wendy’s arrogance and greed finally meet a brick wall, and watching her confidence crumble when Joe reveals Douglas’s changed will is so satisfying. The emotional whiplash — from gloating and scheming to shaking and furious — is brilliantly written. You really feel the walls closing in on her, and that final NYPD call is the perfect cliffhanger. I have to say, this is one of the most gripping chapters in the book!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

After that chilling call from the New York Police Department, I predict the next chapter will bring Wendy face-to-face with Detective Ramirez, who may have shocking news — perhaps Millie hasn’t been found, or worse, the investigation is turning toward Wendy herself. With Douglas’s will betraying her and her money gone, Wendy is cornered. She will likely go from playing the grieving widow to desperately trying to cover her tracks, and the truth about her role in Douglas’s death might finally begin to unravel.
