Second Chances in New Port Stephen - Chapter 30

Eli gave a confused hum. “Won’t you have to work?” Fridays were one of the busiest nights of
the week at restaurants; he remembered that much from his illfated stints as a waiter while
trying to break into comedy.
Nick licked his lips. “I worked so many hours this week, I actually have the night off.”
“And you want to spend your rare Friday off… by going to a gay bar?” Eli shook his head in
disbelief. “You’re sure?”
Nick adopted a hurt expression. “Look, if you don’t want me to come—”
“No, no.” Eli held up his hands. The straightest man he knew at the only gay place in town? This
was beyond a train wreck. This was getting into sinkhole territory, and he liked it. “By all means.
You can pick me up at eleven.”
“Why so late?”
“Eleven isn’t late for a club. Why, what time were you thinking?”
“I was thinking more like nine?”
“What are you, an octogenarian?” Eli huffed.
“Well, I’m not twenty anymore! Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a sleep schedule
back on track after one late night? My insomnia’s already a
nightmare.”
“Jesus god. Fine! Ten o’clock. Split the difference.”
“Deal.” Nick had the nerve to wear a smug little smile on his face, like he’d gotten away with
something. “Wear something decent. I don’t want people to think I’m going to gay clubs with a
slob.”

Eli let out a high, offended gasp, then another when Nick turned around and kept walking down
the beach. “I am not a slob!” he called after him. “This is athleisure.”
“It’s sweatpants,” Nick said without turning around.
Eli ran to catch up. “Athleisure,” he repeated.
