The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 13: Tracker and Traitors
The car door slammed shut behind them, sealing Lucas and Emelly in the dim sanctuary of the backseat. David didn’t waste a second—the engine roared to life, tires screeching as they peeled away from the chaos.
Emelly’s pulse still hammered in her throat, her fingers tangled with Lucas’s in a grip so tight her knuckles ached. She hadn’t even realized she was still holding on until David’s amused voice cut through the tension.
"Boss, you planning to let go of her hand, or should I start calling HR now?" Lucas’s jaw twitched. He released her so abruptly Emelly’s palm tingled from the sudden absence of warmth.
She flexed her fingers, glaring at him. "Finally decided I’m not your personal stress ball?" she snapped. His icy gaze locked onto hers. "You’re the one who clung to me in the alley."
"Because you yanked me!" David coughed loudly. "If you two are done measuring whose pride is bigger—" Lucas cut him off with a sharp gesture. "Status." David’s smirk faded. "Leo’s men are scrambling, but we’ve got another problem." He tossed a small, blinking device onto the center console. "Found this tucked into your coat lining. It’s a tracker. Leo must’ve planted it when he grabbed you." Emelly’s stomach dropped.
"So they know exactly where we are." Lucas snatched the tracker, crushing it in his fist.
"Change routes. Now." David swerved onto a side street, but the damage was already done. Emelly twisted in her seat, watching the shadows for pursuit. "You’re unbelievable," she hissed at Lucas. "One second, I’m a liability you can’t wait to dump, the next you’re dragging me into alleys and death traps like some—some bodyguard with a martyr complex!" Lucas’s voice was lethally quiet.
"You’d rather I left you to Leo?" "I’d rather you make up your mind! Am I a problem or not?" The car lurched around a corner, throwing her against him. Lucas’s arm shot out, bracing her before she could smack into the door.
Their faces were inches apart, his breath hot against her lips. "You’re both," he growled. Emelly’s retort died as her phone buzzed. Jane’s frantic text lit up the screen: Linda sent the photo to the board. Subject line: ‘CEO Compromised.’ They’re calling an emergency meeting. Her blood ran cold. Lucas didn’t need to read it—her expression gave it away. "Let me guess," he said flatly.
"Linda’s finally playing her card." Emelly swallowed.
"We need to get ahead of this." David cursed under his breath. "Boss, we’ve got company." A black SUV surged into view behind them.
Emelly barely had time to register the tinted windows before Lucas shoved her down. "Stay down." Gunfire shattered the rear window. Glass rained over them as David floored the accelerator. Then—suddenly—the car jerked to a halt. A roadblock. Emelly’s heart pounded as Lucas reached for the door.
That’s when she saw it. A thin red dot, wavering against the windshield. It settled squarely on Lucas’s forehead. The world froze. Sniper.
