The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 60: The Calm Before the Storm

The abandoned district of Lasmington was eerily silent as Lucas and Emelly finally reached the safety of a dimly lit alley, their breaths ragged from the rooftop chase. Leo’s men had been relentless, but luck—or perhaps sheer stubbornness—had kept them one step ahead. Lucas leaned against the grimy brick wall, his fingers still entwined with Emelly’s, his migraine conspicuously absent despite the adrenaline still coursing through his veins. Emelly, ever the observant one, noticed the lack of tension in his grip. “No headache?” she asked, her voice laced with amusement. Lucas frowned, as if just realizing it himself. “No,” he admitted grudgingly. She smirked. “Guess you’re stuck with me, then.” He shot her a glare, but there was no real heat behind it. If anything, the corner of his mouth twitched. “Don’t get cocky, Clus. We still have a corporate saboteur to expose.” Emelly rolled her eyes. “Oh, right. Because running for our lives wasn’t dramatic enough. Let’s go straight back into the lion’s den.” “You have a better idea?”

She opened her mouth to retort, then snapped it shut. Lucas had a point. If they didn’t act fast, Leo would cover his tracks, and all of this would have been for nothing. With a reluctant sigh, she nodded. “Fine. But I’m not waiting in the car like some damsel in distress.” Lucas’s lips quirked. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” --- Back at York Group, the office buzzed with tension. Linda Crow, ever the opportunist, had already spread whispers about Emelly’s “reckless behavior” and Lucas’s “questionable judgment.” Tony Bright, ever the loyal colleague, intercepted Emelly the moment she stepped into the lobby. “You look like you’ve been through a war,” he muttered, eyeing her disheveled appearance. “Close enough,” Emelly said dryly. Tony hesitated, then lowered his voice. “Linda’s been stirring up trouble. Be careful.” Emelly shot him a grateful smile. “Thanks, Tony.

But I think it’s time we stirred up some trouble of our own.” --- Meanwhile, Bruno and Serritary lounged in the penthouse suite of the Halthorn estate, glasses of champagne in hand. Their distraction at the gala had been flawless, and for the first time since their arranged marriage, they weren’t at each other’s throats. Serritary swirled her drink, a mischievous glint in her eye. “You know, for a man who claimed he’d never marry, you’re not entirely terrible at this.” Bruno raised an eyebrow. “Is that a compliment?” She smirked. “Don’t let it go to your head.” He chuckled, leaning back. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” There was a comfortable silence before Serritary sighed. “Do you think Lucas and Emelly are okay?”

Bruno’s expression sobered. “Knowing them? They’re probably causing more chaos than we did.”

Back at York Group, Lucas stormed into the boardroom, Emelly at his side, and dropped a file onto the table with a resounding thud. The executives flinched. “Leo Brown has been sabotaging our supply chain,” Lucas announced, his voice cutting through the room like steel. “And thanks to Emelly, we have proof.” Emelly, never one to miss an opportunity, grinned. “You’re welcome.” Linda Crow’s face twisted in fury. “This is absurd! You can’t just waltz in here with baseless accusations—” “Baseless?” Lucas interrupted coldly. He tapped the file. “Bank records. Surveillance footage. Witness testimonies. Would you like to explain your sudden transfers to an offshore account, Linda?” The room fell silent. Emelly crossed her arms, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes. “Checkmate.” --- As the boardroom erupted into chaos, Lucas pulled Emelly aside. “You did good,” he murmured. She blinked, surprised by the rare praise. “I had a good teacher.” His lips curved into something dangerously close to a smile. “Don’t get used to it.” She laughed, but before she could retort, his phone buzzed. A message from Bruno: Leo’s not done. Watch your backs. Lucas’s grip on the phone tightened. Emelly, sensing the shift, frowned. “What is it?” He met her gaze. “The storm’s not over yet.”
