-CHASE-

I slammed the door hard.

Home. After that game. After that interview. After watching Grayson Shaw stand in front of the cameras and say, calm as ever, that he and Blair were still married.

Still married.

He knew the truth now. The baby was his. Not mine. Blair was carrying his child, and she had been in the stands tonight cheering for him like the years between us hadn’t happened. Like I had never existed.

I had hoped the lie would last. Hoped he would stay away long enough for her to forget him and return to me. Instead the bastard had won her back, and I had stood on the ice trying to provoke him into another suspension that never came.

Nothing worked. He had everything. I had this house and a marriage that felt like a prison.

I threw my keys. They fell against the wall and dropped. I kicked a chair. A glass followed, then a picture frame, then whatever sat on the side table.

I wanted the room to look like the inside of my heart. Wrecked.

Blair was supposed to be mine. She had known me longer. She had paid for my food, my equipment, my rent when I had nothing and never once held it over me.

How could she forgive him and not me? How could she look at that man and decide he was worth another chance when I had been the one standing there first?

That’s when I heard it. Movement.

Not from the kitchen. From the bedroom.

Sophie wasn’t supposed to be here. We were meant to meet at the restaurant. I had texted her to cancel because I was in no mood to sit across from her and pretend the night hadn’t destroyed me.

I went down the hall, towards the room.

What I saw stopped me in the doorway.

What the fuck? For a moment I thought this couldn’t possibly be real.

Sophie was naked, snatching at clothes like she could still pretend I hadn’t walked in. Behind her, equally bare, shirt in his fist, frozen like a man who had just remembered whose house this was-Nate Harlan.

My teammate.

“What the fuck?” The words tore out of me.

“You’re cheating on me? With my own teammate?”

Sophie bit her lip. She didn’t look sorry. She looked annoyed that the timing had gone wrong.

“Well. You haven’t been pleasuring me. I had to get it from somewhere. I have needs, you know.”

That was her excuse. Needs. While I had been out there losing a game and watching the woman I actually loved cheer for another man. Loved? Yeah, I loved Blair. It took me too long to realize it.

Nate held up both hands. “Chase-I’m sorry. She begged me. I shouldn’t have-”

I dragged a hand down my face. For a second it felt like there was no air in the room. Just Sophie’s perfume, a teammate I had trusted, and the full weight of every choice that had led me here.

I had only married her after she told me her father was the reason I became captain. I had believed her. I had thrown Blair away for this. For a lie.

That’s when the tears came.

I hated it. I could not stop it. Standing in the doorway of my own bedroom while my wife hunted for a dress and Nate looked like he wanted to vanish through the wall.

“I gave up Blair for you.” My voice broke. “I let go of a girl who actually loved me. For you. She paid for me. For my food, for my equipment, my rent. She did so much and she never even boasted about it. And I married you because you looked like the upgrade. Because I was an idiot.”

Sophie’s face sharpened. “Do not do that. Do not stand there crying over your ex while you just caught me-”

“I want a divorce.”

She went still. Then she laughed once, short and cold.

“That isn’t happening. Not unless you want to lose everything you have.”

We hadn’t signed a prenup. She was entitled to my things. How stupid had I been? How many times had I ignored the warnings?

Nate muttered that he should go. Nobody answered. He grabbed the rest of his clothes and moved toward the bathroom like a coward who had just remembered the coach was her father.

Sophie stepped into a robe and glared at me. “You divorce me, my father makes your life a nightmare. You know that. You have always known that. You want off the team? You want the rest of this season to disappear? You want your money gone? Keep talking about divorce papers.”

I looked at her.

Really looked.

This was the woman I had chosen over Blair Monroe. The woman who had taken credit for a career Blair’s family had built. The woman who had threatened me with her father’s job every time I got close to the truth. I had just found her naked with my teammate in my bed, and she hadn’t even apologized.

“I gave her up for this,” I said again, quieter. “I’m so fucking stupid.”

Sophie did not flinch. “Then you should have been better at keeping her. Why let her go if you’re going to whine about it every minute married to me? I am not going to be the wife you ignore while you chase a billionaire who doesn’t want you anymore. I deserve more. If you know what’s good for you, work on this marriage before I take everything from you.”

I sat on the edge of the bed I did not want to touch and stared at myself in the mirror.

Grayson had Blair. Grayson had the baby. He had someone who would fight the entire world for him and give him everything he desired. He’d won.

I had fucking Sophie. The locker room’s whore. How many of my teammates was she sleeping with? How long had this been happening?

She watched me from the dresser, without a care in the world that she had ruined whatever was left of me.

“You are not leaving me,” she said. “That is the deal you signed when you married the coach’s daughter.”

I did not answer.

I put my head in my hands and cried for the girl I had discarded, for the lie I had told, for the fact that the only person who had ever loved me was never coming back to this house.

Blair was gone.

Sophie was still here.

And I had built this prison myself.
