Chapter 53

~GRAYSON~

Lily’s voice sharpened the second she registered my tone.

“Why do you sound upset?” she asked. “If I did do it, why would that bother you? Why can’t you answer my question?”

I closed my eyes and pressed my forehead briefly against the wall outside the guest room. “Just answer me, Lily.”

She kept trying to change the topic but I needed to know.

“Fine.” I heard shifting on her end, like she was moving into a better position to argue. “From the very beginning you told me you would do everything you could to make Blair hate you. That you’d push her away until she wanted the divorce herself. That once the arrangement was over, we would finally get what we planned. I helped. That’s all this was. Helping you to do exactly what you told me that you would.”

I couldn’t believe the mess I was suddenly in.

The missing bed. Blair in the guest room flipping me off. Photos I hadn’t approved and a version of events I hadn’t done, all justified by promises I had made when the marriage still felt like a cage instead of something I was starting to want.

I ran a hand down my face. This couldn’t be happening.

“You went into our house,” I said, voice low. “You got in our bed in lingerie. You told my wife I had sex with you there and showed her pictures. And your defense is that you were helping me?”

My wife? Did I truly just say that to the woman I have loved for so many years? I did not even recognize myself anymore.

I was angry. I could not hide it or fight it. I was pissed that Lily had went behind my back and done something like this.

“Didn’t it work?” Lily shot back. “She’s out of your room, isn’t she? She’s angry. She believes you’re still mine. That was the entire strategy, Grayson. You should be thanking me. I did you a favor. I did us a favor. And while we’re on this topic, how is it that you’re angry with me over my successful plan but you’re never angry with her when she pulls stunts like this herself?”

I could not answer her. I didn’t know the answer. Even I couldn’t explain what was happening.

“You were getting soft. I saw the honeymoon pictures. Someone had to correct the course before you forgot why you agreed to this in the first place.” Her breath hitched, anger and hurt mixed together. “I love you. I have been patient while you played for the cameras and the Monroes. Forgive me for not sitting quietly while she started to look like more than a debt payment.”

I ran a hand down my face…hard. “You should have told me beforehand.”

“So you could stop me?”

“So I wouldn’t come home to a burned bed and a wife who thinks I fucked you in our sheets while she was gone.”

Silence stretched for a second. When Lily spoke again, the edge had gone colder. “You said she was temporary. You said I was the one you wanted. If those things are still true, this shouldn’t be a crisis. It should be progress. And why do you keep calling her your wife? None of this is real, remember?”

Progress. Not real.

Even while Lily was scolding me, all I could Successfully unlocked and how pissed she was at me for something I hadn’t even done. I hated that she was pissed at me. Hated more that she believed the lie. The protectiveness, the jealousy, the admission I had made out loud about my feelings-all of it had been real.

“I have to go.” I said..

“Do not come to the house again without talking to me first.”

I hung up before the argument could get worse.

The hallway was quiet. The guest room door remained shut. Somewhere behind it Blair was still awake, possibly planning her next move to make my life miserable.

I leaned against the door, trying to figure out if I should go in there and tell her the truth or just leave her to

think the worst about me.

For some reason, Blair thinking I’d invited Lily over to have sex on our bed while she was visiting her family did not feel right to me. I wanted to set things straight. Wanted to tell her the truth.

Then I thought of a better idea. Maybe going in there and telling her what really happened wasn’t the best way to move forward. I was still without a bed and she was still locked in the guest room. I needed to replace the old one and somehow convince her to return to our bedroom.

I knew I wouldn’t be able to fucking sleep if she wasn’t in there with me.

What was wrong with me?
