Chapter 86
-GRAYSON-
My father did not sit down. I didn’t expect him to. I knew I was in for a lecture after doing the opposite of what he asked.
He stood in front of my desk with a printed notice in his hand like he had been waiting all morning to put it there.
“The league came to an agreement,” he said. “You sit the next four games out.”
I froze.

What the fuck? I’d never been suspended for that long before. Though, I’d never beaten anyone unconscious like that before either.
I’d lost control that day. Because I’d seen Blair in the stands and she hadn’t been wearing a jersey supporting me. Because I missed her like crazy and because I fucking hated Chase for even existing.
“Four.”
“Four.” He dropped the paper on the desk.
“Supplemental discipline. Game misconduct at a charity event. They could have gone longer. Be grateful they did not. I was able to beg for you. They listened. Barely. Be grateful it wasn’t worse.”
I shoved the chair back and stood. “This is crazy. Eleven games left and they take four.”
“You took them,” he snapped. “I warned you. I stood in this room and told you not to start another fight during a fucking charity event. You did it anyway. You put Holt on the ice unconscious and now the officials have decided the captain of the Blackridge Wolves cannot be trusted to finish a month without turning a game into a personal boxing match. They also want you to take some therapy sessions. You clearly need it. You have not been acting like yourself.”
Therapy? Fuck no.
“Anger management classes as well.” He added.
“He opened his mouth first.” I informed my father. “I didn’t just randomly attack him. Why am I the only one missing future games?”
“I do not care what he said.” His tone told me he was tired of this. “You are paid to take the draw and play the puck. You are not paid to settle whatever is happening off the ice in front of cameras. Four games. No appeal that will matter in time. You will train. You will stay out of anymore drama. And you will not give them a reason to make it six.”
I paced the room, jaw locked. Four games. What was I supposed to do with all that extra time? Drown in thoughts about Blair anf fucking Chase?
Chase would be back before I was once his injuries healed. He was not being punished this time. I was. 1/4

“There is a party tomorrow night,” my father continued. “League function. Mandatory. Every rostered player in the market. You will attend. You will shake hands. You will look like a professional who understands what he did during the charity event was wrong.”
“Holt will be there.”
“Yes. Which is why you will behave.” He pointed at me. “If you so much as touch him in a room full of officials and sponsors, I will not protect you from the next decision they make. Do you understand me?”
I understood.
I hated it.
I still said, “Fine.”
The party was exactly what I expected. Blackridge on one side of the room, Southbay on the other, staff moving through the middle like referees in fancy clothes. We weren’t the only teams present but we were definitely the teams getting the most attention.
The last person I wanted to see tonight was fucking Chase.
He found me anyway.
There was something different about him tonight, like he knew something I did not.
The bruises on his face had yellowed. He still looked like a man who had been put on a stretcher. He also looked pleased with himself. Why? I did not know.
“You want me to send you to the hospital again?” I asked before I could stop myself.
Chase chuckled. “No. I’d like to stay away from fighting now that I have a baby on the way.”
What? He had a baby on the way?
My eyes narrowed. “Sophie’s pregnant?”
She seemed like the type of girl that wouldn’t want to ruin her figure. I was surprised she’d actually consented to getting pregnant this early in their marriage.
If she was truly pregnant, then why the fuck was he still going after Blair?
His mouth curved.
“Not Sophie. Blair.”
I froze.
I knew he did not just say my wife’s name.

For a second I thought I had misheard him over the music.
It couldn’t be Blair. Why would it be her when he was still married?
“Say that again,” I told him.

“Blair’s pregnant.” He said it quieter this time, like a secret he was doing me the favor of sharing. “That hospital visit you saw in the articles? Wasn’t just concern. She had a reason to be there. So did I. That’s why she chose the hospital I was staying in, to make it easier for me to attend her appointment.”
Blair.
Pregnant?
Fuck no.
I did not want to believe it. My heart was not ready for such news.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?” Chase tipped his head. “You were married to her. You think you knew her. I knew her for six years. Sorry, even more than that. I know what she was waiting for.”
I stepped in close enough that a nearby official glanced over. I did not touch him. My father’s warning stayed in my head. I was already in a lot of trouble and they were all watching me closely tonight. I did not want them to remove me from the rest of the season.
“If you are lying about this-”
“I’m telling you the truth. Why would I lie about something this huge?”
No. I did not want to believe him. She was still my wife. She could not be having his baby.
“She’s pregnant, Shaw. Thanks for divorcing her. She’s completely mine again.”
Thanks for divorcing her?
My hand tightened into a fist but I forced myself not to do anything.
I suddenly felt dizzy.
That’s why she signed the papers so easily. She always planned on going straight back to him.
She didn’t waste time.
Chase watched me absorb it and smiled like he had been waiting weeks for this exact expression.
He’d won.
“Enjoy the party,” he said. “Try not to hit anyone. I hear you’re already sitting out four games.”

He walked away before I could answer.
I stayed where I was, a drink I had not touched cold in my hand.
Blair was pregnant. Pregnant.
And Chase had been the one to tell me.
