I caught him before he made it ten feet.

My hand closed around his arm rough enough to stop him without giving the officials across the room a reason to come over. I did not need them walking over here and causing a scene before I could find out what the fuck was going on. He had some explaining to do. He couldn’t just drop something like that and walk off.

Chase turned, already smiling, like he had been waiting for me to follow.

“Say it again,” I said. “All of it.”

He glanced past my shoulder, then back, voice low and pleased. “After she left you, she came straight to me that night. Same day you asked for the divorce. She was hurt. Angry. She didn’t want to be alone in it.” His mouth curved. “We spent the night together. No protection. The entire night. That’s why she’s pregnant. That’s why she was at the hospital. She came so I could be there for the ultrasound. So that I could see my baby growing inside her.”

I felt like all the blood draining from my face.

That was close. Too close to the date we’d slept together without protection. Would Blair really have slept with him so soon? It seemed strange for someone who waited until marriage to have sex. It didn’t sound like her at all. But I couldn’t deny the picture I’d seen of her kissing him.

I had not touched Lily since that morning of trying to break things off with her. Not after the hug in the driveway. Not after the screaming. Not after I told Blair I loved someone else so I would not have to live with what I actually felt.

I had slept in a chair and stared at unsigned papers. I had left the wedding photos on the wall.

And she had gotten pregnant by Chase, right after signing the divorce papers. She hadn’t waited at all. She’d simply moved on to the next captain.

Was everything Lily have been saying to me the truth? Blair truly only ever wanted Chase. Not me?

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?” Chase asked again. “You saw us kissing in the park. You saw her at the hospital with me. She was there for me. For our baby.”

Our baby.

I felt sick.

Four games. My father’s voice. Officials in the same room. One more swing and I was not sitting four, I was sitting the rest of the year. I had to be careful. Could not let my anger control my actions anymore.

“Stay away from her,” I said. But did I even have the place to say that anymore? She was having his fucking baby. And no one except my family knew I hadn’t signed the divorce papers yet. To Blair and the rest of the 1/3

Chase laughed under his breath. “You’re the one who handed her back. Don’t look shocked that she came running to me.”

I let go of him before I put him through a table.

I did not wait to hear any more.

I was out of the ballroom before the next tray of glasses passed, down the stairs.

The valet handed my keys too fast. I was in the driver’s seat with the door shut and both hands on the wheel before I trusted myself to move.

I could not believe it.

The same day I asked for the divorce.

I had watched her walk out and told myself the lack of a fight meant she wanted Chase more than she wanted the marriage with me. And turns out that I was right the entire time.

It’s always been him.

I slammed a fist against the wheel once, then again.

Pregnant. Holt’s baby. Not mine.

They were already going to appointments together. Did they pick out baby names as well?

Fuck me.

I had been careful with Lily for years.

I had not been careful with Blair. I was worried I might have gotten her pregnant. But instead, the baby belonged to Chase? He was the father?

But the dates were so close. Didn’t that mean there was a chance the baby could be mine? And not his?

My fucking head hurt.

I started the car because sitting in the lot was going to end with me walking back inside and asking more questions that I truly didn’t want the answer for.

I did not go home. Home still had her face on the wall and a folder on the table with only one signature.

Home would make the lie in my chest louder.

She had slept with him.

She was having his baby.

Every article Lily had shoved at me was now racing through my mind as I tried to put the pieces together.

I pulled over only when my hands started shaking too drastically to pretend I was fine.

Blair Monroe. My wife.

Pregnant.

And the man who had told me he had her first and lied, was now telling me he would have her last—with a child in the middle of it.

I sat in the dark with the engine running, my heart and mind racing.

I wanted to believe that there was still a chance for our marriage. I wanted to believe that Blair still wanted to be with me. That I was wrong. I was so close to asking her to come back with me before the coach entered and ruined things.

Clearly, that wouldn’t have changed a single thing.

Blair had a baby on the way…and it wasn’t mine. The fucking truth hurt.
