Even though I now knew she was pregnant with Chase’s baby, my heart still squeezed painfully the moment I saw those tears glistening on her cheeks.
I still cared for her deeply. That much was certain.
Who was I kidding? It was more than mere care.
I was forcing myself to walk around with Lily, knowing full well she wasn’t the one I truly wanted to be with. And now, after entering a quiet hallway and seeing Blair crying alone, it felt like my entire world was shattering from just that single, heartbreaking look.
I had asked about pregnancy hormones like an idiot. That was not how I wanted to bring up that conversation with her. But I was so hurt and upset about everything Chase had told me, that I couldn’t stop the words from leaving my mouth.
She’d confirmed it for me. She’d asked how I knew. She didn’t tell me it was all a lie. She didn’t deny it.
Then she had told me to go back to Lily, the woman I loved. The woman she thought I was in love with based on things I’d said to her in the past. The love I had for Lily was nothing compared to what I had for her.
She didn’t realize how far her words were from the truth. She didn’t understand the influence she had over me. She could get me to my knees if she only tried.
How could she know this? I’d never told her the truth. I’d kept it from her.
I should have let it end in that hallway.
I did not.
I came back into the reception looking for Holt.
I bounced into him near the bar, close enough that a couple of Southbay staff glanced over. They were all on edge because of me. I’d started the therapy but it wasn’t helping. Therapy couldn’t get rid of these emotions.
“What did you do to her?”
Chase blinked. “What?”
“Blair.” Her name came out rough. “She’s crying. What did you do?”
Genuine confusion crossed his face, or a good imitation of it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t spoken to her tonight. As you can see, Sophie is here and she gets a little crazy if I show any attention to Blair. I need my peace tonight.”
Is that why she was crying? Was she hurt that Chase came here with Sophie while she was pregnant?

Fuck. Why would she get pregnant for this fucking loser?

I stepped in. “You told me she came to you the night she left. You told me that baby is yours. So why the fuck would you come here with Sophie? And why haven’t you organized the divorce yet? Have you completely lost your fucking mind?”
“I said I haven’t spoken to her tonight. I have my reasons for it.” His mouth tightened. “You are the one who needs to mind his business. This doesn’t concern you.”
I almost hit him again. I almost snapped and told him that she was still my wife.
Then I saw her.
Across the room, near the side exit. Head down. Moving fast, like she had decided the whole reception was a mistake and couldn’t wait to escape.
There was still so many questions that I had for her. I wasn’t sure when I’d bounce into her again. This was the perfect opportunity to follow her out. With no one to disturb us and hopefully no reporters around either.
I shoved Chase out of the way.
A hard push that sent him into the bar rail and drew a short burst of noise from the people nearest us. I didn’t bother looking back. I was already going after her.
That’s when Lily stepped into my path.
She put herself there with the timing of someone who had been watching the entire exchange.
One hand on my chest. Chin lifted.
“Let her go.”
‘Move.”
“No.” Her fingers pressed in. “You need to let go, Grayson. You promised me we would work on this. You stood in my house and asked for space and then you came back and said you would try. That does not include chasing Blair Monroe through a reception after you already chose to stand here with me.”
“She is upset.”
“She is always upset when she sees you with me.”
Lily’s voice stayed low, for us.
I frowned. I didn’t think that was her reason for being upset. Not if she was pregnant for Chase. Why would she be bothered about me?
“That is not your job anymore. You asked for the divorce. She signed it. Just forget about her now. You need to focus on building your career, especially after the fights that took place recently over her.”
Lily did not drop her hand.

“If you go after her now,” she said, “you are going to bring a lot of attention to her again. I think it’s best you drop it.
The exit door opened and closed.
Blair was gone.
Chase was still at the bar, watching, a faint satisfied line at the corner of his mouth. I was trying my hardest to not harm him but he made it fucking difficult every single time.
I had wanted to reach her.
I had not.
And the worst part was that even believing the baby was Holt’s, even with Lily in front of me demanding the promise I had been too much of a coward to keep, my body had still moved toward Blair like she was the only person in the building who could make me happy.
Lily’s hand stayed where it was. And I didn’t try to move it again. Maybe she was right. Maybe I had to drop this. Let Blair figure out what she truly wanted on her own.
