He was ready to tell her to keep her precious key, to walk out with Maya at his side.
But before he could form the words, Maya spoke.
Her voice was calm, far too calm.
"Okay, I'll stay. In exchange... you must give him the key you have."
Cassian's heart stopped. He grabbed her by the shoulders, frantic.
"No! You can't do that! I won't let you!"
"I'm sorry, Cassian, but this isn't your decision," she whispered, her eyes filled with a grief so deep it made him ache. "I'm staying. That's my choice."
"No, Maya! I won't leave you here!"
The queen turned her icy gaze to Maya, intrigued.
"Are you certain of your decision, little wandering fairy?"
It shattered Maya's heart to even think of separation. But through the pain, she knew this was her purpose. Her fate.
"Yes," she said firmly. "That is my decision."
"Then come here and swear loyalty to me."
Maya took a step forward. But Cassian's hands locked on her shoulders, spinning her to face him. His eyes were desperate, pleading.
"Please, Maya... don't do this. We don't need that key. Let's get out of here—together."
She reached up, cradling his cheek with heartbreaking tenderness.
"This was my destiny, Cassian. I cannot escape it."
"We create our own destiny with the decisions we make!"
Maya kissed him softly—a kiss that tasted like goodbye.
"I wanted to believe that too. I wanted to believe I was the owner of my own fate. But long ago, I received a prophecy. It said that when I gave my heart, I would return to my home. And now... it has happened."
"What?"

Maya stopped before her, reached beneath the collar of her dress, and pulled out a small key—the key Cassian had sought. She handed it to a fairy standing nearby.
"Give them the key after she makes the oath."
The fairy nodded and stepped back, her eyes downcast.
Maya took a breath. "What do I have to do?"
The queen rose. Despite being shorter than Maya, she seemed to tower over everything in the room. Her voice carried absolute authority.
"Get on your knees and swear that I will be your ruler from now on—and forever."
Cassian lunged forward, desperate to stop it. But two guards blocked his path. When he tried to push through them, they seized his arms, immobilizing him.
"Let me go!"
"You cannot get any closer."
Desperate and unable to move, Cassian tried to summon his magic. Nothing happened. His power refused to answer. The fairy queen looked at him with displeasure.
"What are you trying to do? She already said no one wants trouble in my kingdom."
"Tell your guards to let me go! We don't want your key!" Ethan and Dantriel shouted in outrage.
The queen's voice sliced through the noise. "She is the one who should decide—not you."
She turned to Maya. "What do you choose, little wandering fairy?"
Maya looked back at Cassian. She saw the desperation carved into his face, the terror and the agony of losing her. But this decision was never theirs to make.
"I'm sorry, Cassian... but I cannot do what you ask."
And then, in front of the queen, Maya knelt.
"I swear before you, queen of all fairies, to be loyal to you and obey your orders. I swear by my name, Maya, to bind myself to you and be under your command."
A satisfied smile curved the queen's lips. She leaned down, took Maya's chin with one finger, and blew a soft breath onto her face. A sweet fragrance—flowers and ripe fruit—filled Maya's nostrils. And then she felt it: invisible chains wrapping her entire body, tightening around her very soul. Her oath had been no simple words. She was bound to the queen, bound by magic, bound by blood and spirit.
Then came the pain. A crushing pressure against her chest. Her lungs seized. Her breathing turned ragged and shallow.
Cassian screamed. "What have you done to her?!"
"Nothing," the queen replied, calm as still water. "It is her own oath binding her to me. From now on, you are no longer a wandering fairy, Maya. You serve me. You will be loyal to me alone." She looked at Maya with a gleaming smile. "Do not be afraid. The pain will pass. It is your oath being engraved into your heart. From this moment, you will no longer be capable of lying. That is the law of all fairies who serve me. Lies are like fire—they can destroy everything in seconds. That is why my servants cannot lie. Now... you are forced to tell the truth."
The fairy holding the key stepped toward Cassian and extended her hand. But he did not take it. His whole being rejected the key, because accepting it would mean admitting Maya was lost forever.
"I don't want your key! I only want her back!"
"The price has already been paid for what you desired," the queen said coldly. "That key now belongs to you. Do with it what you will. It is no longer my problem. Take it and leave my kingdom."
Cassian's rage exploded. He threw a punch at the fairy on his right, knocking him away. He kicked the one on his left, then drove his knee into the guard's face, dropping him to the ground. Too fast for the others to even react, he sprinted to Maya, wrapped his arms around her, and held on.
"I don't plan on leaving this place without her."
Maya couldn't speak—the pain in her chest stole her voice. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She caressed Cassian's face, her eyes begging him to leave, for his own safety, for his survival. But he refused.
"No. I will not leave you in this place. I will not go without you. I don't care if the whole world sinks into endless darkness."
The guards surrounded him. They tore Maya from his arms—and it took four of them to restrain Cassian, who fought like a wild beast.
The queen's voice rang out once more.
"I have shown you kindness, yet you have thrown it away by attacking my people. You must leave... while my patience still stands."
Dantriel stepped forward and tried to take the key. But an invisible force repelled him.
"You cannot take the key," the queen observed. "Because... he has lied to us."
"We fairies do not lie," the queen continued. "The key is yours, but its owner is not you."
She turned her gaze to Cassian. "The owner is him. It was he who paid the price. Only he can take what belongs to him."
Dantriel looked at the raging Cassian. "Take the key."
"No." Cassian's voice was raw, broken. "I do not want it. Give Maya back to me!"
The queen's gaze was cold, unforgiving.
"Now she belongs to me. So take what you came for... and leave."
