The silence in the room was heavy, thick as morning fog, as Alessandro watched his brother return from his mission. There was something terribly wrong. Cassian's face – that face which had always been a mask of stone, betraying nothing – was now etched with lines of profound grief. His eyes held the shadow of a man who had lost something irreplaceable, and Alessandro's heart clenched with worry.

"How did your mission go?" Alessandro asked cautiously, his voice barely above a whisper.

Without a word, Cassian reached for the chain around his neck, his movements slow and mechanical, as if even that simple action cost him dearly. He pulled the key from beneath his shirt and tossed it onto the table with a clatter that echoed through the silent chamber like a death knell.

"My mission was fulfilled," he said, his voice flat, hollow, utterly devoid of triumph.

Alessandro knew his brother better than anyone. Cassian was a man who kept his feelings locked away in an iron vault, who never let pain show on his face. But now? Now he looked like a man who had been shattered from within.

"You don't look very well, Cassian. What happened?" Alessandro pressed, concern lacing every word.

Cassian's fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His jaw tightened, the muscles working beneath his skin as he struggled to find the words.

"It's Maya," he finally managed.

"What happened to her? Have you argued?" Alessandro asked, hoping it was something that simple.

But Cassian shook his head slowly, and the pain in his eyes deepened, darkened, like a wound that refused to heal. "If it were only that, I wouldn't be like this. I had to pay a very high price for that key, and that price was Maya."

Alessandro felt his blood run cold.

"She is half fairy," Cassian continued, his voice cracking at the edges. "And the queen of the fairies demanded that Maya stay in her kingdom as payment. She made her swear loyalty to her. I could not do anything to protect the woman I love. I stood there, Lessan, and I could not do a single thing."

The words hung in the air like a curse. Alessandro understood now why his brother was so broken. To be separated from the woman you love by forces beyond your control – that was a torture worse than any physical pain. He stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on his brother's shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Cas. It's partly my fault. If I hadn't given you that mission, you would still have the woman you love by your side."

But Cassian's eyes blazed with fierce determination, cutting through the grief like a blade. "I don't plan on abandoning her. I'll come back for her. I promised her."

Alessandro's heart sank. The war with King Venobich could ignite at any moment, and Cassian was one of his finest generals. Facing that battle without his brother would shake his confidence to its core. But he knew he could not ask Cassian to abandon his heart's desire. If the positions were reversed, if April were lost to him, Alessandro knew he would burn the world to the ground just to reach her.

"I understand how you feel," Alessandro said softly, placing his hand over Cassian's heart. "Do what your heart tells you."

Cassian's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Lessan, I'm sorry. I know what's coming isn't easy, but I can't be without her. I don't want a life without her."

"I know. That's why you have total freedom. I don't tie you to me, brother. Go for her."

Cassian pulled his brother into a tight embrace, the kind of embrace that spoke of gratitude, of love, of bonds that could never be broken. "Thank you, Lessan. I promise to return as soon as possible."

"I will be waiting for you. I wish you luck, brother."

"Thank you."

"When will you leave?"

"Tomorrow. I will attend the meeting with the other generals, and then I will leave early in the morning."

A knock at the door interrupted their conversation. April poked her head through the doorway, her eyes bright and curious.

"Can I come in?"

"Yes, come in."

April entered gracefully, and Alessandro's arm instinctively wrapped around her waist, drawing her close. It was a small gesture of possession, of love, of protection. April smiled up at him before turning to Cassian.

"How did the mission go?"

Cassian gestured toward the key still lying on the table. "The key is there."

April breathed a visible sigh of relief, as if a massive weight had been lifted from her shoulders. "That's good. I knew you could do it. Where is Maya? I would like to greet her."

The question hung like a sword above Cassian's head. He looked down at his feet, unable to meet April's eyes, and his voice was barely a whisper when he answered.

"Maya is not here. She had to stay in the fairy kingdom. But it will not be for long. I will bring her back."

April's eyes held a thousand questions, but she could not – would not – ask a single one. The pain radiating from Cassian was enough to silence even the most curious tongue.

Before anyone could speak further, chaos erupted outside. A great bustle filled the air, the sound of marching feet, clanking armor, and shouted orders. Everyone rushed to the balcony to see what was happening.

It was the elf army.

Alessandro's face turned pale with alarm. He immediately pulled April back inside, away from prying eyes. The elves had come to fight alongside them, but Alessandro knew that April bore an uncanny resemblance to his mother – and he could not risk anyone discovering her existence, not when it could put her in mortal danger.

"Aby, you'd better go back to your room and not come out until I tell you," he said urgently.

"Why?"

"The elf army just arrived. I don't want any of them to mistake you for your mother."

"I understand. I'll go back to my room."

Alessandro pressed a tender kiss to her cheek. "I'll see you later. Try not to look out onto the balcony."

"Okay, I won't."

As April vanished down the corridor, Alessandro turned back to the table. He reached for the key, intending to lock it away in a safe place, but his hand stopped short – frozen, as if it had struck an invisible barrier.

"What's wrong? Why can't I touch it?" he demanded.

Cassian approached the desk and picked up the key with ease. He held it up, examining it with a grimace.

"Damn it! Only I can touch it."

"What? Why?"

"The same thing happened in the land of the fairies. The queen said that I had paid the price, that the key belonged to me now. No one else can touch it."

Alessandro frowned, troubled. "For the moment, it will be better for you to keep the key. It will be safer in your possession."

Cassian hung the key around his neck once more. The moment it touched his skin, discomfort flickered across his face – a dark, unpleasant sensation that made him want to tear it off.

"I have to go. We'll talk later."

Without waiting for a response, Cassian strode out of the room, leaving Alessandro alone with his thoughts.

At the entrance of the palace, the elven army stood in disciplined rows. They wore white armor that gleamed in the sunlight, and their weapons glowed with a faint, ethereal light. Dantriel stepped forward to greet Alessandro.

"Here is our army," he said, his voice proud. "As promised, they have obtained blessed weapons, effective to combat the creatures born of darkness."

"I appreciate your help," Alessandro replied.

"We need a place for our soldiers, and also a place where they can train."

"I will make sure that they are provided with everything they need."

"Thank you."

And so, troops were stationed, tents were pitched, and preparations for war began. But far away, in the mystical kingdom of the fairies, another story was unfolding – one drenched in sorrow and isolation.

---

Several days had passed since Maya had said goodbye to Cassian. At first, she had felt utterly out of place, like a broken bird in a cage of gold. She was in a strange land where she knew no one, surrounded by creatures who looked at her with curiosity and distance. And she was angry – so terribly angry – at the fairy queen for tearing her away from Cassian so abruptly.

When they had been forcibly teleported, the queen had approached her with surprising gentleness. She had cupped Maya's face in her hands, caressing her cheeks with a tenderness that spoke of longing and recognition, as if Maya reminded her of someone long lost. Then she had taken the pendant – the one Dantriel had given Maya – and removed it from her neck.

"You don't need this anymore," the queen had said softly. "You're home now."

Maya had been too shocked to speak. But her gaze had spoken volumes – a storm of anger, hatred, and the unbearable pain of losing the man she loved, the man she would never see again. Cassian had promised to come back for her, but Maya knew the truth. The queen would never let her go. This was her prison, her cage, her fate.

Now, as Maya stood by the window, staring out at the shimmering landscape of the fairy kingdom, a knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.

"Can I come in?" a soft voice asked.

Maya turned to see Sara, one of the fairies who had been assigned to care for her. "Of course, come in."

Sara entered, her delicate wings fluttering as she approached. "How are you?"

"I'm better," Maya lied.

"The queen asked me to come get you."

"For what?"

Sara shrugged helplessly. Maya already knew why. The queen had been summoning her for tea every day, always with the same excuse – "I just want you to keep me company" – but Maya knew it was more than that. She was being watched, observed, controlled. Every move she made, every breath she took, was carefully monitored.

Maya sighed heavily, the weight of her captivity pressing down on her shoulders. She wanted to refuse, to scream, to fight. But she knew she couldn't. In this place, no one could disobey the queen's orders. Everyone was forced to bow to her will.

And so Maya rose, smoothed her dress, and followed Sara to yet another tea party with the woman who had stolen her life.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter was an emotional gut punch! My heart absolutely broke for Cassian and Maya. The way Cassian came back carrying invisible chains of guilt, grief, and determination all at once – it was so powerfully portrayed. And poor Maya, trapped in a golden cage, watching hope die one day at a time.

The author masterfully balances multiple emotional threads: Cassian's heart-wrenching sacrifice, Alessandro's guilt and his fierce protectiveness over April, the ominous threat of war gathering on the horizon, and Maya's quiet despair in the fairy kingdom. The detail about only Cassian being able to touch the key was brilliant – a constant, painful reminder of what he lost to obtain it.

The chemistry between all the characters feels real, and the underlying tension keeps you flipping pages desperately. This is storytelling at its finest.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

I predict that Cassian will leave tomorrow as planned, venturing back into the fairy kingdom with everything on the line. But nothing is ever that simple – I suspect the fairy queen will not make his rescue easy. She may have darker plans for both Maya and Cassian, perhaps using Maya as bait for some larger scheme. Meanwhile, with Cassian gone, the war with King Venobich will draw closer, leaving Alessandro shorthanded and vulnerable. April's secret might also be at risk, especially with the elven army so close. A storm is brewing, and I fear the next chapters will be explosive!
