"Out of the question?" Now there's anger in his tone — not his usual anger, but something sharper, directed at *her*. This is a first. "Nina, she is in trouble. You put her in that situation."
"Right, because she slept with my husband. Am I supposed to feel sorry for her?" Nina's words are bitter, and honestly, she doesn't care.
But Enzo fires back. "You pushed her into it!"
"She didn't have to take the bait," Nina retorts. "Nobody twisted her arm. Anyway, she'll be fine. Andy never did anything to me for months — not until after we got married." She sniffs dismissively. "I'll write her a letter after the divorce, okay? I'll warn her about him. Before she marries him."
Silence hangs on the line for a few long, heavy beats. Then Enzo speaks again, and his words are like ice water down her spine. "Millie hasn't left the house in three days."
Nina's eyes dart up to Cecelia's cabin. Her daughter is still inside, packing and probably chattering away with her new friends. Nina glances around at the other parents arriving for pick-up, then scurries off to the side, lowering her voice even further. "What do you mean?"
"I was worried about her," Enzo explains. "So I put a red mark on the tire of her car. It's been three days, and the mark is still in the exact same spot. She hasn't gone anywhere in three days."
Nina huffs. "Look, Enzo. That could mean anything. Maybe the two of them went on a trip together."
"No. I've seen his car move."
"Maybe they're carpooling," Nina offers, rolling her eyes. "Maybe she doesn't feel like driving anywhere."
"The light is on in the attic."
Something shifts in Nina's chest. "The..." She clears her throat, stepping further away from the other parents. "How do you know that?"
"I went in the backyard."
"After Andy fired you?"
"I had to check, okay? There is somebody up there."
**The Weight of Guilt**
Nina squeezes her phone so tightly her fingers tingle. "So what? The attic was her bedroom. Is it such a big deal that she's up there?"
"I don't know. You tell me."
A dizzy sensation washes over Nina. She never really thought this through — not when she planned to make Millie her replacement, and not later when she wanted Millie to kill that bastard. She left Millie the pepper spray. She gave her the key to the room. She thought Millie would be fine. But now, a sickening realization claws its way up from the pit of her stomach. She thinks of Millie trapped in that room in the attic, having to endure whatever torture Andrew has come up with. The thought makes her want to throw up.
"What about you?" Nina asks, her voice small. "Can't you go in and check on her?"
"I rang the bell. No answer."
"What about the key under the flowerpot?"
"It wasn't there."
"What about—"
"Nina," Enzo growls, his patience snapping. "Are you saying you want me to break into that house? Do you know what would happen to me if I got caught? *You* have a key. You have every right to go in there. I'll go with you, but I can't go alone."
"But—"
"This is all just excuses!" he bursts out. "I can't believe you would let her suffer the way you suffered."
The words hit Nina like a physical blow. She takes one last look up at Cecelia's cabin. Her daughter is just emerging now, lugging her bags behind her, her face bright with anticipation for their Disneyland adventure.
Nina takes a deep breath. "Fine," she says. "I'll come back. But only on one condition."
