The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 61: The Calm Before the Storm

The tension in York Group’s boardroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. Lucas York stood at the head of the table, his sharp gaze sweeping over the directors, while Emelly Clus stood beside him, her fingers curled tightly around the damning evidence they had risked everything to retrieve.

The documents in her hands exposed Leo Brown’s sabotage—fraudulent transactions, stolen intellectual property, and a meticulously planned scheme to bring York Group to its knees. Linda Crow, Lucas’s scheming assistant, sat rigid in her seat, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the armrests of her chair. She had underestimated Emelly one too many times, and now, the walls were closing in. “This is irrefutable,” Lucas said, his voice cold and commanding. “Leo Brown has been manipulating our supply chain, bribing our contractors, and leaking confidential data. And if any of you had even an ounce of suspicion but chose to stay silent, consider your positions forfeit.” A murmur rippled through the room. Emelly watched as Linda’s face paled, her lips pressing into a thin line. She had been Leo’s inside woman, feeding him information, but now, with the proof laid bare, her betrayal was undeniable. Emelly couldn’t resist a small smirk. “Funny how some people thought they could play both sides and get away with it.” Linda’s glare was venomous, but before she could retort, Lucas cut in. “Effective immediately, Linda Crow is suspended pending investigation. Security will escort her out.” The room erupted into hushed whispers as Linda was led away, her heels clicking furiously against the marble floor. Emelly exhaled, the weight of their victory settling in—but Lucas’s tense posture told her this was far from over. --- Meanwhile, across town, Bruno Halthorn lounged in the sunlit garden of the Jonshon estate, watching Serritary Jonshon with amused fascination. The stubborn heiress was currently attempting to prune rose bushes with all the grace of a bull in a china shop. “You’re massacring those flowers,”

Bruno remarked, sipping his coffee. Serritary shot him a glare. “I’ll massacre you if you don’t shut up.” He chuckled. Their marriage had begun as a business arrangement—her family’s failing finances, his need for political alliances—but somewhere along the way, their constant bickering had taken on a strangely affectionate edge. Bruno’s phone buzzed. A message from Lucas: Leo’s not done. Watch your back. His smile faded. Serritary noticed the shift immediately. “What’s wrong?” Bruno hesitated before answering. “Just business. But stay close to the house for a while.” She rolled her eyes. “If you think I’m going to sit around like some damsel in distress, you’re dumber than you look.” Despite himself, Bruno grinned. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” --- Back at York Group, Emelly and Lucas retreated to his office, the adrenaline of their confrontation slowly ebbing away. Lucas rubbed his temples—his migraine was creeping back, a relentless shadow whenever Emelly wasn’t close enough. She noticed instantly. “Headache?” He nodded curtly. Without a word, Emelly stepped forward and took his hand. The effect was immediate—his muscles relaxed, the pain dissolving under her touch. Lucas exhaled, his grip tightening slightly around her fingers. “We won today,” she said softly. “But Leo won’t stop.” Lucas’s jaw clenched. “No. He’ll retaliate.” Emelly smirked. “Good. I’ve been wanting to humiliate him properly.”

Lucas couldn’t help the faint curve of his lips. “You’re terrifying.” “You love it.” The words slipped out before she could stop them, and for a heartbeat, the air between them crackled with something unspoken. Lucas’s gaze darkened, but before he could respond, his phone rang—Tony Bright’s name flashing on the screen. Emelly pulled away, clearing her throat. “I should check on Jane. She’s been texting me nonstop.” Lucas watched her go, the absence of her touch leaving him colder than before. --- That evening, Jane Claudias paced their tiny apartment, ranting about Tony’s latest obliviousness. “He brought me coffee today—my favorite order—and then spent twenty minutes talking about spreadsheets. Spreadsheets, Emelly!” Emelly laughed, tossing a pillow at her. “Just tell him you like him already.” Jane groaned. “It’s not that simple!” Emelly’s phone buzzed—a message from Lucas. Meet me tomorrow. We have a problem. Her stomach twisted. The fight wasn’t over.
