The night air was thick with tension as Lucas York’s grip on Emelly Clus’s wrist tightened, his jaw clenched so hard she could almost hear his teeth grinding. The gala had dissolved into chaos after Leo Brown’s dramatic exit, leaving behind a trail of whispered threats and uneasy glances. Emelly, still shaken from being forcibly dragged away by Leo, barely registered the cold wind biting at her bare arms until Lucas shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. “You’re reckless,” Lucas muttered, his voice low and rough. Emelly bristled, her usual defiance flaring despite the lingering fear in her chest. “And you’re overbearing. I didn’t ask for your help.” A muscle twitched in Lucas’s jaw. “You never do. That’s the problem.” David, Lucas’s ever-loyal driver, pulled the car around swiftly, his expression grim. Jane Claudias, Emelly’s best friend, was already inside, her face pale with worry. “Emelly! What the hell happened back there?” Before Emelly could answer, Lucas cut in. “Leo Brown happened. And if she keeps poking at his business, next time, I might not get to her in time.” Emelly shot him a glare. “I can handle myself.” “Really?” Lucas’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Because from where I was standing, you were about to be handled—by Leo.”


The car fell silent, the weight of his words sinking in. Emelly crossed her arms, refusing to admit he was right. But the memory of Leo’s grip on her arm, the way he’d hissed threats into her ear, sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. Jane, ever the peacemaker, cleared her throat. “Okay, enough. We’re all safe now. Let’s just get out of here before Leo decides to send his goons after us.” David accelerated, weaving through the streets of Lasmington with practiced ease. Lucas’s phone buzzed incessantly—likely York Group’s board demanding answers about the gala’s abrupt end. He ignored them, his focus entirely on Emelly, who stubbornly stared out the window.


Meanwhile, across town, Bruno Halthorn and Serritary Jonshon were embroiled in their own brand of chaos.


Their forced marriage, meant to salvage both their families’ financial ruin, was proving to be anything but smooth. Serritary, perched on the edge of Bruno’s penthouse sofa, scowled as she flicked through a fashion magazine with exaggerated disinterest. “Remind me again why I agreed to this farce?” Bruno, pouring himself a generous glass of whiskey, smirked. “Because your father’s company was drowning, and mine had the lifeboat.” She tossed the magazine aside. “You’re insufferable.” “And yet, here you are.” He took a slow sip, watching her over the rim of his glass. “Stuck with me.” Their bickering was interrupted by a call from Lucas. Bruno answered, his tone shifting to seriousness. “You alright?” Lucas’s voice was tight. “Leo made his move. He took Emelly.” Bruno’s grip on the phone tightened. “Is she okay?” “She’s fine. For now.” Lucas exhaled sharply. “But this isn’t over.” Serritary, eavesdropping, arched a brow. “Trouble in paradise?” Bruno shot her a look before responding to Lucas. “What do you need?” “Keep an eye on Serritary. If Leo’s bold enough to go after Emelly at a public event, he won’t stop there.” Bruno nodded, though Lucas couldn’t see it. “Got it.” As the call ended, Serritary crossed her arms. “What was that about?” Bruno studied her for a long moment before answering. “You’re not leaving this penthouse until I say so.” She scoffed. “You can’t be serious.” “Deadly.”


Their eyes locked in a battle of wills, the air between them crackling with unspoken tension. Back in the car, Emelly finally broke the silence. “We can’t just run. Leo’s not going to stop.” Lucas turned to her, his gaze intense. “No. But we fight smart.” She met his eyes, the usual spark of defiance tempered by something deeper—trust. “Then what’s the plan?” A slow, dangerous smile curved Lucas’s lips. “We hit him where it hurts.” The car sped into the night, the city lights blurring past.
