The morning after the gala, Lucas York sat in his office, fingers drumming against the polished mahogany desk. His migraine had returned with a vengeance—proof that Emelly Clus wasn’t nearby. The thought of her made his jaw tighten. She was infuriating, reckless, and yet, he couldn’t deny how much he needed her. Not just for the relief she brought his headaches, but for the way she challenged him at every turn. Across the city, Emelly flopped onto the couch in the tiny apartment she shared with Jane, groaning as she recounted the previous night’s chaos. "I swear, Lucas has the emotional range of a teaspoon. One minute he’s yelling at me for ‘reckless behavior,’ the next he’s practically dragging me out of Leo’s reach like some overprotective bodyguard."


Jane smirked, tossing her a bag of chips. "Sounds like someone’s in denial about his feelings." Emelly rolled her eyes. "Please. The only thing Lucas York feels is irritation—specifically toward me." Meanwhile, Bruno Halthorn paced the length of his penthouse, his usually composed demeanor fraying at the edges. Serritary Jonshon, his unwilling bride, lounged on the sofa, flipping through a fashion magazine with deliberate disinterest. "You can’t just leave," Bruno said for the third time, his voice tight. "Not after what happened last night." Serritary didn’t look up. "I don’t recall signing a contract that said I had to obey you." Bruno exhaled sharply. "This isn’t about obedience. It’s about safety. Leo’s men were watching you too." That made her pause. She snapped the magazine shut. "And whose fault is that? If you hadn’t dragged me into this mess—" "You think I wanted this?"


Bruno cut in, frustration boiling over. "A marriage of convenience wasn’t exactly my dream either." Their argument was interrupted by Lucas’s call. Bruno answered tersely, listening as Lucas laid out their next move against Leo. When he hung up, Serritary arched a brow. "More scheming?" Bruno ignored the jab. "We’re meeting at York Group. You’re coming with me." She scoffed. "Like hell I am." But Bruno was already grabbing his coat. "Either walk out with me, or I carry you. Your choice." Back at York Group, Emelly arrived—late, as usual—only to find Lucas waiting with a stack of files and a glare. "You’re late." She grinned. "And yet, you still waited for me. How sweet." Lucas shoved the files at her. "These need to be reviewed by noon. And don’t even think about cutting corners." Emelly flipped open the first file, scanning it with her photographic memory. "Already done. Next?" Lucas’s eye twitched. She was impossible. And yet, the way her mind worked fascinated him.


Their banter was cut short when Bruno and Serritary stormed in—Bruno looking like a thundercloud, Serritary like she’d rather be anywhere else. Lucas arched a brow. "Trouble in paradise?" Bruno ignored him, turning to Emelly. "We need a plan. Leo’s not backing down." Emelly tapped her chin. "Then we hit him where it hurts—his ego. And his wallet." As they strategized, Serritary wandered to the window, arms crossed. Emelly sidled up beside her. "Married life not what you dreamed of?" Serritary smirked. "Oh, it’s a nightmare. But watching Bruno lose his mind is almost worth it." Emelly laughed. "Sounds familiar." Across the room, Lucas and Bruno exchanged glances. Their women were trouble. And yet, neither would have it any other way. The chapter ended with Tony Bright bursting in, breathless. "We’ve got a problem. Leo just made his move." Silence fell. The game had just gotten more dangerous.
