The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 70: Victory and the Return of Mischief

The courtroom was silent as the judge delivered the final verdict. Leo Brown, once a formidable rival, stood pale and defeated as he was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for financial fraud, embezzlement, and corporate sabotage. The evidence Lucas and Emelly had meticulously gathered—exposing his illegal offshore accounts and manipulated stock trades—had been undeniable. As the gavel struck, a collective exhale swept through the room. The war was over. Lucas, ever composed, allowed himself the smallest smirk as Leo was led away in handcuffs. Beside him, Emelly folded her arms, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes. "Justice tastes sweet, doesn't it, Your Highness?" she murmured, unable to resist teasing him even in victory. Lucas shot her a sidelong glance. "Don’t get too comfortable, Wildflower. The board still expects a full report on how we stabilized the stock plunge." Emelly rolled her eyes. "Oh, please. You mean I stabilized it while you were busy glaring at spreadsheets."

David, standing nearby, coughed to hide a laugh. Jane, who had come to support them, elbowed Emelly. "You two are insufferable." But the truth was, their bickering had taken on a different tone—lighter, almost playful. The tension between them had shifted into something warmer, though neither would admit it.

Back at York Group, the office buzzed with relief. Linda Crow, still bitter, watched from her desk as Emelly was praised for her quick thinking during the crisis. Tony Bright clapped Emelly on the shoulder. "You’re a legend. Leo didn’t stand a chance." Jane grinned. "And to think, you started here as an intern who spilled coffee on Lucas." Emelly groaned. "Don’t remind me." Lucas, overhearing, arched a brow. "Ah, yes. The incident that proved your natural talent for chaos." Emelly stuck her tongue out at him when his back was turned, earning stifled giggles from their colleagues. --- That weekend, Emelly visited Jane’s family home in Birbinghums for a much-needed break. The countryside air was a welcome change from the corporate battlefield. But peace was short-lived. Jane’s cousin, Jorkdarly, a charming but overly confident young man, took one look at Emelly and decided she was his next conquest. He spent the afternoon "accidentally" brushing against her, offering exaggerated compliments, and insisting she try his "world-famous" barbecue. Emelly, amused but uninterested, played along with polite disinterest—until Jorkdarly’s antics escalated.

When he "tripped" and spilled wine on her dress, she sighed. "Wow. Smooth." Jane groaned. "Ignore him. He thinks he’s irresistible." But the real trouble came when Jane’s uncle, deep in debt to a local loan shark, showed up in a panic. The thugs had threatened the family, demanding payment by sundown. Emelly, never one to back down, intervened—only to find herself cornered in the barn by two burly enforcers. Just as one reached for her, the barn door slammed open. Lucas stood there, his expression icy. "Touch her, and you’ll regret it." Emelly blinked. "What are you doing here?" Lucas didn’t take his eyes off the thugs. "David tracked your location when Jane called Tony in a panic." The thugs hesitated, but Lucas’s aura of authority was unmistakable. With a few sharp words and a discreet phone call (likely to his legal team), the men retreated, muttering curses. Emelly exhaled. "Well. That was dramatic." Lucas finally looked at her, his gaze unreadable. "You’re welcome." She smirked. "I had it under control." "Clearly." Their banter was familiar, but something flickered beneath the surface—something neither dared name.

Back in Lasmington, Bruno and Serritary’s arranged marriage continued to simmer with unresolved tension. Serritary, stubborn as ever, refused to admit she cared for Bruno, even as she memorized his coffee preferences. Bruno, meanwhile, found himself lingering near her favorite bookstore just to "run into" her. Tony and Jane, oblivious to their own growing feelings, bickered over office gossip—though Jane’s cheeks pinkened whenever Tony smiled at her. And Lucas and Emelly? They returned to their old routine: her pranks (replacing his coffee with decaf, reprogramming his office chair to recline unexpectedly), his retaliation (assigning her impossible tasks she somehow aced). But late at night, in the quiet of his penthouse, Lucas would replay the way Emelly’s laughter lit up the room. And Emelly, lying awake in her shared apartment, would remember the warmth of his hand when he pulled her to safety. The war was over. But the real game—the one between their hearts—had only just begun.
