Of course Tian-yi was also there. No dad could resist a chance to stack furniture and argue with
other dads about what should go where. Eli would have pointed this out to Nick, but he soon
realized Nick was also a father and therefore eager to join in. Things quickly became the most
competitive game of cooperative Jenga Eli had ever seen.
“See, Wen, if we put the couch up on its end, we’ll have more room.”
“That’s BS. The couch should go right there on its feet. More stable.”
“Not for things stacked on top. They will fall. Anyway, this couch is ugly. Nick, why bring such an
ugly couch across the country?”
“It’s got good lumbar support!”
That earned a few impressed murmurs.
Eli watched from a distance, doing his part by moving things onto the lawn for the dad squad to
handle. He was only a semi-stepdad, so he was staying out
of it. Maybe the desire to lift heavy things and put them down in the optimal spot would come
to him if he and Nick ever got married. The thought twigged something in his belly. He’d last
seen Zoe in person for the Wu family’s Lunar New Year celebration, but now that Nick was going
to be out on the West Coast, they could all spend more time together.
