It wasn’t even a very good gag. Nick laughed anyway. Because Eli would always make him laugh.
Eli smiled at the sound and stepped around the beach towel. “Listen, I’m sorry, I am. But I
needed some time to think things over—a lot of things, actually.” He paused. “And I also needed
time to amass this amazingly seductive setup,” he said, gesturing to the items he’d brought.
Nick was trying not to smile. It was hard, though, when Eli knew where to find every one of his
buttons. He stuck his tongue in his cheek. “Can I ask how the thinking went?”
A gusty sigh left Eli’s lips. “I’ve concluded that I need to stop worrying so much about what the
future holds. I want to be happy when I can be.” He stepped forward and stopped right in front
of Nick, their bare toes mere inches apart in the sand. “Does that—is that okay?” The wind
coming off the water ruffled his hair like he was a goddamn cologne model. Nick was not
immune.
He also felt, somewhere in his chest, a kinship with what Eli was saying. Seemed like Nick wasn’t
the only one doing some soul-searching lately. They were finally both on the same page. This
could work. This could really, honestly work.
“Yeah,” he said. His throat went dry. “It’s okay.”
“Yeah?” Eli swayed closer. His hands landed lightly on Nick’s hips. His mouth was right there.
Nick held his face in his hands and kissed him.

Eli opened to him without a second’s hesitation. He tasted like seawater, the salt burn of it
pricking Nick’s tongue. It must have been a vigorous swim
because he was hot—literally everywhere: his mouth, the skin of his face, his neck where Nick’s
hands slid to cradle him, the whole line of his damp body where it pressed against Nick’s. He
could feel water soaking into his khakis from Eli’s swim trunks. That, and the way Eli kissed him,
like this was inevitable, made him shiver.
